Selecting an appropriate travel carrier is the foundational step in preparing to transport a Short-tailed Opossum safely. The ideal carrier must balance security against escape with adequate ventilation, manageable size, and enough interior space for the animal to turn around and adopt a comfortable resting position without being so large that the animal is thrown around during vehicle movement. Small hard-sided plastic carriers designed for hamsters or small reptiles often work well, as do modified plastic storage containers with ventilation holes drilled into the sides and lid. Soft-sided fabric carriers are generally less suitable because Short-tailed Opossums can chew through mesh panels and lightweight fabric relatively quickly when motivated.
The interior of the travel carrier should be outfitted with familiar-smelling bedding material to reduce stress. Placing a small piece of fleece or fabric from the animal's regular enclosure inside the carrier provides olfactory comfort and gives the opossum a substrate to burrow into during transit. A small fabric pouch or hide — similar to the sleeping pouches many keepers use in their permanent enclosures — offers an enclosed space where the animal can retreat and feel secure. Avoid using loose paper-based or particulate bedding during travel, as it can shift and create dust in the confined carrier environment, and it complicates cleaning in the event of motion sickness or defecation during the journey.
Securing the carrier lid or door is a non-negotiable safety consideration. Short-tailed Opossums are surprisingly strong for their size and are capable of pushing open loosely latched doors or lids, particularly when stressed by the unfamiliar sensations of travel. Carriers with snap-locking mechanisms, secure latches, or spring-loaded doors are preferable to those that rely on friction or pressure fits alone. Some keepers add an additional layer of security by placing a bungee cord or cable tie around the carrier as a failsafe against accidental opening. Any ventilation modifications made to the carrier must be smooth-edged and small enough to prevent the animal from squeezing through, as Short-tailed Opossums can compress their bodies through gaps that appear impossibly small.
For journeys exceeding a few hours, the carrier setup should include provisions for hydration. A small piece of water-rich fruit such as seedless grape or melon placed inside the carrier provides moisture without the spillage risk associated with water bottles or dishes during vehicle travel. A full water bottle attached to the carrier wall can leak during transit, soaking the bedding and chilling the animal, while open dishes will inevitably spill with the first turn or stop. The fruit method delivers hydration in a controlled, non-spillable format that the animal can consume at its own pace.
