Prevost's Squirrel, Callosciurus prevostii, is a large and vividly colored tree squirrel native to the tropical and subtropical forests of Southeast Asia. Its natural range spans a broad arc across the region, encompassing the Malay Peninsula from southern Thailand through Peninsular Malaysia, the major islands of Sumatra and Borneo, and numerous smaller islands scattered throughout the Strait of Malacca and the South China Sea. This distribution places the species within one of the most biodiverse terrestrial ecosystems on Earth, the lowland and montane dipterocarp rainforests that have harbored extraordinary mammalian diversity for millions of years.
The genus Callosciurus, to which Prevost's Squirrel belongs, is the most species-rich genus of tree squirrels in Asia, containing over a dozen recognized species distributed from the Indian subcontinent through mainland and insular Southeast Asia. Within this diverse genus, Prevost's Squirrel stands out as one of the largest members and arguably the most chromatically striking. Its distinctive tricolored pelage pattern — a jet-black dorsum, a broad band of white or cream along each flank, and a deep chestnut or russet-red ventral surface — is unlike any other squirrel species in the world and has made the animal instantly recognizable to naturalists since the earliest European explorations of the region.
Prevost's Squirrels inhabit primarily lowland and hill dipterocarp forests, though they have also been recorded in secondary growth, plantations, gardens, and other human-modified landscapes where sufficient tree cover remains. They are strongly arboreal and rarely descend to the ground, spending the majority of their active hours foraging and traveling through the mid-canopy and upper canopy layers of the forest. Home ranges are relatively large for a squirrel of this size, reflecting the patchy and seasonally variable distribution of their preferred food resources including figs, durian, rambutan, and the seeds of various dipterocarp species.
The subspecific diversity within Callosciurus prevostii is remarkable and reflects the complex biogeography of insular Southeast Asia. Taxonomists have recognized as many as eleven subspecies, each associated with a particular island or cluster of islands, and these subspecies vary considerably in the intensity and distribution of their coloration. Some island populations display nearly uniform black dorsal pelage with brilliant red underparts, while others exhibit broader white lateral bands or subtle variations in the shade and extent of the chestnut belly fur. This geographic variation is a product of the repeated cycles of sea-level change during the Pleistocene glaciations, which alternately connected and isolated island populations and drove the differentiation of distinct local forms.
