Agoutis belong to the genus Dasyprocta within the family Dasyproctidae, a group of large, ground-dwelling rodents native to Central and South America and parts of the Caribbean. The genus contains roughly thirteen recognized species, though taxonomic boundaries remain debated among mammalogists. The most commonly encountered species include the Central American agouti (Dasyprocta punctata), the Brazilian agouti (Dasyprocta leporina), and the black agouti (Dasyprocta fuliginosa), each adapted to distinct but overlapping ranges across the Neotropical realm.
Agoutis inhabit a wide spectrum of forested environments, from lowland tropical rainforests and gallery forests to dry deciduous woodlands and cloud forests at moderate elevations. They are most abundant in mature forest with a closed canopy and a rich understory of fruiting trees and palms, which supply the hard-shelled nuts and fleshy fruits that constitute the bulk of their diet. Their preference for dense cover and proximity to water sources shapes their distribution within these habitats, and they are seldom found far from reliable moisture.
The physical form of the agouti reflects its terrestrial, forest-floor lifestyle. Their elongated hind legs are built for explosive sprinting and agile dodging through undergrowth — a critical adaptation for evading predators such as jaguars, ocelots, and large raptors. Their coarse, glossy fur ranges from tawny orange to dark brown or nearly black depending on species and geography, and the hairs carry a distinctive banded pigmentation pattern known as agouti ticking, a term borrowed by geneticists and applied to coat-color descriptions in many other mammalian species.
Ecologically, agoutis are among the most important seed dispersers in Neotropical forests. Their habit of scatter-hoarding — burying individual nuts and seeds in widely spaced caches for later retrieval — directly shapes forest regeneration patterns. Seeds that are cached but never recovered germinate in locations removed from the parent tree, promoting genetic diversity and spatial distribution of tree species. Research has demonstrated that several large-seeded tree species, including the Brazil nut (Bertholletia excelsa), depend almost entirely on agoutis for effective seed dispersal, making the agouti a keystone species in these ecosystems.
