Map turtles belong to the genus Graptemys, a group of freshwater turtles native exclusively to North America. The genus was first formally described in the early nineteenth century as naturalists began cataloging the rich diversity of reptiles found in the rivers and lakes of the eastern and central United States. Early specimens were often collected from the Mississippi River basin, which remains the heartland of map turtle diversity to this day.
The common name "map turtle" derives from the intricate pattern of fine lines and markings on the carapace, which early observers thought resembled the contour lines of a topographic map. This distinctive feature made them instantly recognizable among North American freshwater turtles, and the name has endured through centuries of scientific revision. Several species within the genus were not distinguished from one another until the mid-twentieth century, when closer examination of shell patterns, head markings, and habitat preferences revealed a surprising number of distinct species.
The taxonomic history of map turtles reflects broader trends in herpetology.
