Map Turtles derive their common name from the intricate network of fine lines, swirls, and contour-like markings on the carapace (upper shell) that resemble the topographic contour lines of a geographical map. This distinctive patterning, visible particularly in juveniles and young adults before it may become obscured by algae accumulation or general darkening with age, is the single most recognizable visual feature of the genus and immediately distinguishes Map Turtles from the smoother, more uniformly colored shells of closely related genera such as Painted Turtles (Chrysemys) and Sliders (Trachemys). The common name is well-established and universally used in both the pet trade and scientific communication.
The genus Graptemys currently contains 14 recognized species, making it one of the most species-rich freshwater turtle genera in North America. The genus name derives from the Greek words "graptos" (inscribed or painted) and "emys" (freshwater turtle), directly referencing the painted or inscribed appearance of the shell markings. Several species also bear the common name "sawback" in reference to the pronounced vertebral keel — a row of raised, sometimes spiny projections along the dorsal midline of the carapace — that is particularly prominent in certain species and gives the shell a jagged silhouette when viewed from the side.
The species most commonly encountered in the pet trade include the Mississippi Map Turtle (Graptemys pseudogeographica kohnii), the Common or Northern Map Turtle (Graptemys geographica), the False Map Turtle (Graptemys pseudogeographica pseudogeographica), and the Ouachita Map Turtle (Graptemys ouachitensis). Less commonly available but occasionally seen are the Texas Map Turtle (Graptemys versa), the Cagle's Map Turtle (Graptemys caglei), and several other species with restricted ranges and correspondingly limited availability. Many of the more range-restricted species are conservation concerns, and collection from the wild is regulated or prohibited.
Species identification in Map Turtles is critically important because adult size varies enormously across the genus, particularly in females. In the narrow-headed or "sawback" species group (sometimes called "mollusk-crushing" species due to the females' enlarged heads adapted for crushing snail and mussel shells), adult females can reach 8 to 10.5 inches in carapace length while males of the same species may reach only 3.5 to 5 inches. This extreme sexual size dimorphism — among the most pronounced in any turtle genus — means that species identification directly determines the enclosure size, filtration capacity, and long-term space commitment required. A male Ouachita Map Turtle may live comfortably in a 75-gallon tank, while a female Mississippi Map Turtle of the broad-headed clade requires 125 gallons or more.
All Map Turtle species are native to the river systems of eastern and central North America, with the greatest species diversity concentrated in the drainages flowing into the Gulf of Mexico from Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas. They are fundamentally riverine turtles — adapted to flowing water with moderate to strong currents, rocky or woody basking sites, and relatively clear water. This riverine adaptation distinguishes them ecologically from the pond and lake-dwelling Painted Turtles and Sliders and directly informs their captive care requirements, particularly regarding water flow, filtration, and water quality sensitivity.
