Unlike many reptile species that tolerate dry shipping conditions well, Tiger Salamanders are amphibians with permeable skin that is highly sensitive to dehydration, and the transport container must be designed with moisture retention as a primary consideration. A failure to maintain adequate humidity during transit can result in rapid desiccation, skin damage, and death, even over distances that would pose no challenge for a hardier, scale-covered species.
The ideal transport container for an adult Tiger Salamander is a rigid, ventilated plastic container with a secure latching lid, sized to allow the animal to turn around comfortably without excessive room for sliding and tumbling during movement. Deli cups with pre-punched ventilation holes work well for individual animals, while larger snap-lid containers can accommodate small groups if necessary. The container should be lined with a substrate that holds moisture without becoming waterlogged, with damp unbleached paper towels or damp sphagnum moss being the two most commonly recommended options. The substrate should be moist to the touch but not saturated to the point of standing water, as prolonged immersion in unaerated water during a stressful transit can contribute to skin irritation and bacterial issues.
Ventilation is essential but must be balanced against humidity retention. Containers with excessive ventilation will lose moisture rapidly, particularly in heated vehicles or warm ambient conditions, while containers with insufficient airflow risk the buildup of carbon dioxide and ammonia from the animal's waste products. A practical approach is to use containers with small ventilation holes concentrated near the top of the container, where air exchange occurs without directly exposing the animal to drying airflow. For longer transits, a small piece of damp moss placed over the ventilation holes on the inside of the lid can serve as an evaporative buffer that maintains humidity within the container.
The container should be placed inside a secondary insulated vessel for protection against temperature extremes and physical shock. A rigid styrofoam box, an insulated cooler, or a purpose-built reptile shipping box with foam-lined walls provides thermal buffering and impact protection that a bare plastic container cannot. This outer vessel should be secured in the vehicle to prevent shifting during turns and stops, and it should be positioned away from direct sunlight, air conditioning vents, and the heated or cooled surfaces of the vehicle's cargo area.
