The Tiger Salamander (Ambystoma tigrinum) is the largest terrestrial salamander in North America, with adults regularly reaching lengths of 20 to 35 centimeters and exceptional individuals exceeding that range. Its distribution spans a vast swath of the continent, from the southern portions of Canada through the Great Plains, the Midwest, and the eastern seaboard of the United States, extending southward into northern Mexico. Within this enormous geographic range the species occupies a remarkably diverse array of habitats, from tallgrass prairies and arid sagebrush flats to deciduous woodlands and the margins of agricultural land. Wherever suitable breeding ponds and loose, diggable soil coexist, the Tiger Salamander is likely to be found or to have been found historically.
The genus Ambystoma, commonly referred to as the mole salamanders, is an exclusively New World lineage whose evolutionary roots extend deep into the Cenozoic era. Fossil evidence suggests that ambystomatid salamanders were present in North America by at least the late Paleogene, and the diversification of the genus appears to have accelerated during the climatic fluctuations of the Pleistocene, when advancing and retreating glaciers repeatedly fragmented and reconnected populations across the continent. The Tiger Salamander complex, as currently understood, represents one of the most geographically widespread and morphologically variable lineages within Ambystoma, a variability that has made its taxonomy one of the more contentious issues in North American herpetology.
Ecologically, the Tiger Salamander occupies a dual niche. As larvae, the animals are fully aquatic, gill-breathing predators that feed on invertebrates, tadpoles, and even smaller salamander larvae within ephemeral and semi-permanent ponds, cattle tanks, and roadside ditches. Metamorphosed adults transition to a largely fossorial existence, spending the majority of their time underground in burrows excavated by themselves or appropriated from small mammals such as ground squirrels and pocket gophers. Adults emerge on the surface primarily during wet nights and the breeding season, when mass migrations to natal ponds can involve thousands of individuals moving across the landscape simultaneously.
The species' capacity to thrive in disturbed and human-modified landscapes has been a defining feature of its ecological story. Tiger Salamanders adapted readily to the transformation of the Great Plains by agriculture, colonizing stock ponds, irrigation ditches, and flooded fields as substitute breeding habitat. This adaptability contributed to the species' reputation as common and unremarkable for much of the twentieth century, a perception that belied the complexity of its biology and the ecological significance of its role as both a predator and a prey species within grassland and woodland food webs.
