Successful transport of a spiny lizard begins well before the animal is placed in a container. The preparation phase establishes the conditions that minimize stress, reduce the risk of injury, and ensure the animal arrives at its destination in the best possible condition. Because spiny lizards are alert, fast-moving animals with strong flight responses, the preparation process must account for their tendency to bolt when handled and their capacity to injure themselves by thrashing against hard surfaces during confinement.
The animal's health status should be assessed before any transport event. A spiny lizard that is actively shedding, visibly dehydrated, showing signs of respiratory distress, or in the early stages of illness is a poor candidate for the additional stress of travel. If the transport is for the purpose of a veterinary visit to address an existing health concern, the keeper should balance the urgency of the appointment against the risk of exacerbating the condition through transport stress. For non-urgent trips, it is generally advisable to wait until the animal is in a stable, healthy state before subjecting it to travel. Females that are visibly gravid with eggs should be handled with particular care, as the physical compression and vibration of transport can pose risks to developing eggs.
Hydration is a critical pre-transport consideration. Spiny lizards, particularly those from arid-adapted species, are efficient water conservators under normal conditions, but the stress of transport can accelerate fluid loss through increased respiration rate and stress-related metabolic changes. Offering water via misting or a shallow dish in the days leading up to transport ensures the animal begins the journey in a well-hydrated state. A light feeding twelve to twenty-four hours before transport provides energy reserves without the risk of undigested food decomposing in the gut during a prolonged period of suboptimal body temperature. Larger meals should be avoided in the immediate pre-transport window, as the inability to thermoregulate properly during transit can impair digestion.
Acclimating the animal to handling in the days before transport can reduce the intensity of its stress response when the time comes to transfer it to a shipping container. Spiny lizards that are accustomed to occasional handling will typically calm more quickly in a transport container than individuals that have had minimal human contact. This is not to suggest that wild-caught or minimally handled animals cannot be transported safely, but rather that the keeper who anticipates an upcoming transport event and takes steps to reduce the animal's baseline stress level is investing in a smoother experience for both parties.
