The spiny lizard belongs to the genus Sceloporus, one of the largest and most species-rich lizard genera in the Western Hemisphere. Members of the family Phrynosomatidae, spiny lizards are distributed across an enormous geographic range that stretches from the southern reaches of Canada through the entirety of the United States and Mexico and into portions of Central America as far south as Panama. Within this vast territory, the genus has radiated into more than one hundred recognized species, each adapted to the particular ecological conditions of its range. They occupy habitats as varied as Sonoran desert scrubland, high-altitude pine-oak forest in the Sierra Madre, coastal chaparral, Rocky Mountain talus slopes, and the hardwood fences and stone walls of suburban backyards across the American South and Southwest.
The evolutionary origins of Sceloporus trace back tens of millions of years to the diversification of iguanian lizards in the Americas. Fossil evidence and molecular phylogenetic analyses place the ancestral phrynosomatid lineage in the arid and semi-arid regions of what is now the western United States and northern Mexico, an area that has functioned as a crucible of lizard diversification throughout the Cenozoic era. As tectonic uplift produced the mountain chains of western North America and as climate oscillations drove cycles of habitat expansion and contraction, ancestral spiny lizard populations became geographically isolated and diverged into the extraordinary array of species present today. The genus represents one of the most successful adaptive radiations among squamate reptiles in the New World.
Ecologically, spiny lizards are primarily insectivorous, feeding on ants, beetles, flies, caterpillars, spiders, and other small invertebrates captured through a combination of active foraging and sit-and-wait predation. Many species are strongly heliothermic, spending significant portions of the day basking on exposed rocks, logs, or fence posts to maintain body temperatures well above ambient air temperature. This conspicuous basking behavior has made them among the most visible and familiar lizards across much of their range, a factor that has shaped both their cultural significance and their role in scientific research. Territorial males of many species display vivid blue ventral patches during the breeding season, performing push-up displays on elevated perches to advertise their presence to rivals and potential mates.
The common name spiny lizard refers to the keeled, pointed dorsal scales that are a defining morphological feature of the genus. These rough, overlapping scales give the animals a distinctly textured appearance and provide a degree of physical protection against both predators and abrasion from the rocky substrates many species favor. The name fence lizard, widely applied to several common species including Sceloporus undulatus, reflects the animals' well-known affinity for wooden fence rails and similar man-made structures, which serve as convenient basking platforms and elevated territorial display sites.
