The Senegal Chameleon (Chamaeleo senegalensis) is a small, adaptable Old World chameleon native to the broad savanna belt of West and Central Africa. Its range is among the most extensive of any African chameleon species, stretching from Senegal and The Gambia in the far west across Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria, Cameroon, and into portions of Chad and the Central African Republic. This enormous geographic footprint encompasses a wide variety of habitats, from dry Sahelian scrubland and Guinea savanna woodland to the margins of gallery forests along river systems. Unlike many chameleon species that are confined to narrow montane or forest niches, the Senegal Chameleon thrives in open and semi-open landscapes, including degraded habitats, agricultural margins, and even suburban gardens.
The species' ecological flexibility is one of its defining characteristics. Where many chameleons require dense canopy cover, stable humidity, and specific temperature gradients, the Senegal Chameleon tolerates a surprisingly wide range of environmental conditions. It occupies low shrubs, tall grasses, hedgerows, and the lower branches of scattered trees, often at heights of less than two meters above the ground. During the rainy season, individuals are frequently observed crossing roads and paths on the ground, a behavior that brings them into regular contact with human settlements. This ground-level activity, combined with the species' willingness to colonize human-modified landscapes, has made it one of the most commonly encountered chameleons across its range.
Physiologically, the Senegal Chameleon is a relatively small and unassuming member of its genus. Adults typically reach total lengths of six to eight inches, with females tending to be slightly smaller and more robust than males. Coloration is variable but generally muted compared to many other chameleon species, with a base palette of olive green, brown, or grayish tones overlaid with darker banding or spotting. The species is capable of color change in response to temperature, mood, and social signaling, though its chromatic repertoire is narrower than that of larger, more visually striking chameleons. This modest appearance belies a complex and specialized anatomy shared with all chameleons: independently rotating turret eyes, a ballistic tongue capable of capturing prey at distances exceeding the animal's own body length, and zygodactylous feet adapted for precise arboreal grip.
The natural diet of the Senegal Chameleon consists almost entirely of invertebrates. Grasshoppers, beetles, flies, moths, ants, and spiders form the bulk of its prey, captured through patient ambush hunting from a stationary perch. The species demonstrates a sit-and-wait foraging strategy characteristic of most chameleons, relying on its camouflage and slow, deliberate movements to avoid detection by both prey and predators. In the wild, predation pressure comes from birds of prey, snakes, and small carnivorous mammals, and the Senegal Chameleon's primary defense is immobility and cryptic coloration rather than flight.
