A stressed animal will display dark, muted coloration — often dark brown or black — rather than its normal resting palette. It may gape defensively, hiss, or attempt to bite when approached. In severe cases, a chameleon may become lethargic, refuse food, or display the closed-eye behavior during daylight hours that is one of the most reliable indicators of illness or extreme stress in the species. Understanding these signs allows keepers to assess the animal's condition upon arrival and to adjust their post-transport husbandry — reducing handling, providing visual barriers, ensuring optimal hydration — to facilitate recovery.
The goal of any transport protocol for Panther Chameleons is to minimize the duration, intensity, and unpredictability of the stressors involved. This means keeping transit times as short as possible, maintaining stable and appropriate temperatures throughout the journey, providing a secure container that prevents the animal from being tossed around while also offering adequate ventilation, and avoiding the temptation to repeatedly open the container to check on the animal during transit. Every element of the transport plan should be designed with the understanding that the chameleon cannot be acclimated to transport in the way that a dog or cat can — each trip is an inherently stressful event that must be managed rather than normalized.
