Oustalet's Chameleon (Furcifer oustaleti) holds the distinction of being the largest chameleon species in the world, with adult males occasionally reaching total lengths approaching 70 centimeters from snout to tail tip. The species is endemic to Madagascar, the island nation off the southeastern coast of Africa that serves as the global epicenter of chameleon diversity. More than half of all described chameleon species are found on Madagascar and its surrounding islets, and Oustalet's Chameleon stands at the upper extreme of the size range within this extraordinary assemblage. Its range spans a remarkable breadth of the island, from the dry deciduous forests of the west and northwest through the central highlands and into the degraded agricultural landscapes that increasingly characterize much of the Malagasy interior.
Unlike many of Madagascar's chameleon species, which are confined to narrow habitat corridors or isolated mountain ranges, Oustalet's Chameleon is notable for its ecological flexibility. The species thrives not only in intact forest but also in secondary growth, agricultural margins, village gardens, and even urban peripheries. This adaptability has made it one of the more commonly encountered large reptiles across much of Madagascar, a characteristic that has been both a source of scientific interest and a factor in its availability within the international reptile trade. Its willingness to colonize disturbed habitats distinguishes it from many of its more habitat-specialist congeners and has likely contributed to its persistence even as large swaths of Malagasy forest have been lost to slash-and-burn agriculture.
The species' diet in the wild reflects its large body size. Adult Oustalet's Chameleons are formidable ambush predators capable of consuming sizable invertebrate prey including large insects, spiders, and land snails, as well as small vertebrates such as geckos, smaller chameleons, nestling birds, and even small rodents. The ballistic tongue, a defining feature of the chameleon family, is proportionally massive in this species and can be projected at distances exceeding one and a half times the animal's body length. This feeding apparatus, combined with independently rotating turret-like eyes that provide near-360-degree visual coverage, makes the Oustalet's Chameleon an extraordinarily efficient sit-and-wait predator.
Reproduction follows the oviparous pattern typical of the genus Furcifer. Females deposit clutches of eggs in excavated soil chambers, with clutch sizes in this species frequently ranging from 30 to over 60 eggs, among the largest clutch sizes recorded for any chameleon. The incubation period is prolonged, often lasting six to eight months depending on ambient temperature and moisture conditions. Hatchlings emerge at roughly five to six centimeters in length and are immediately independent, receiving no parental care. This reproductive strategy, combining large clutch size with extended incubation, contributes to the species' ability to maintain populations even in fragmented and disturbed landscapes.
