The shipper must book the shipment in advance, comply with the airline's packaging specifications (which typically include requirements for container size, insulation, and labeling), and deliver the package to the airline's cargo facility at the origin airport. The recipient collects the package from the cargo facility at the destination airport. Transit times for domestic air freight are typically same-day or next-morning, which minimizes the animal's time in transit and reduces the risk of temperature excursions.

Ground courier services that specialize in or accept live reptile shipments offer an alternative to air freight, particularly for shorter distances or when air service is unavailable. Reptile-specific shipping services have emerged in several markets, operated by individuals or small companies that transport live animals in climate-controlled vehicles along established routes. These services often operate on fixed weekly or biweekly schedules, with pickup and delivery points at reptile expos, designated meeting locations, or door-to-door service in some areas. The advantage of these specialized services is that the animals remain in a temperature-controlled environment throughout transit and are handled by personnel experienced with live reptiles.

Mainstream parcel carriers such as FedEx, UPS, and national postal services have varying policies regarding the shipment of live reptiles. Some carriers accept live reptile shipments under specific conditions, while others prohibit them entirely. Policies can change with limited notice, and shippers should verify current acceptance policies directly with the carrier before booking. When mainstream carriers are used, overnight or priority service is strongly recommended to minimize transit time. Standard ground shipping services with multi-day transit times are not appropriate for live Flying Geckos due to the extended exposure to uncontrolled temperatures and the risk of delays.

Regardless of the shipping method chosen, communication between shipper and recipient is essential. During hot weather, the vehicle's air conditioning should be used to prevent the interior from reaching temperatures that could cause heat stress. Under no circumstances should a Flying Gecko be left unattended in a parked vehicle, as interior temperatures can rise or fall to lethal levels within minutes depending on conditions.

For keepers who are relocating to a new residence, the challenge of transporting a Flying Gecko extends beyond the animal itself to the enclosure, equipment, and bioactive substrate systems that support it. Planning the move in advance allows the keeper to break down the enclosure, transport the components separately, and set up the new enclosure at the destination before or immediately after transporting the gecko. Live plants, isopod and springtail colonies, and established substrate should be maintained in sealed containers during transit to preserve the bioactive community. The goal is to have the gecko's enclosure operational and stabilized at the new location before the animal is introduced, minimizing the period during which the gecko is without its established microhabitat.

For transport to veterinary appointments, a simple setup with a ventilated container, damp substrate, and a piece of bark or cork is usually sufficient. The keeper should inform the veterinary clinic in advance that a reptile patient is being brought in, as some clinics prefer to schedule exotic animal appointments at specific times to avoid cross-contamination risks with mammalian patients. Destination Acclimation & Post-Transport Care

The period immediately following transport is critical for the Flying Gecko's recovery and long-term health. The stress of confinement, temperature fluctuation, dehydration, and disruption of the animal's normal behavioral routines during transit can suppress immune function, reduce feeding response, and trigger stress-related behaviors. A structured acclimation protocol helps the animal transition smoothly from the transport environment back to normal captive conditions and reduces the risk of post-transport health complications.

Upon arrival, the gecko should be transferred from its shipping container to its permanent or quarantine enclosure with minimal handling. The enclosure should be fully set up in advance, with temperature gradients, humidity levels, lighting cycles, and hiding places established and verified before the animal is introduced. For newly acquired animals — as opposed to animals returning to an established enclosure after a veterinary visit or temporary absence — a quarantine period of at least thirty days is strongly recommended. The Flying Gecko is a species that does not typically tolerate handling well even under normal circumstances, and the additional stress of transport makes it especially important to allow the animal to settle into its enclosure without disturbance. Observation should be conducted from outside the enclosure, preferably during the evening hours when the gecko is naturally active.
