The Flying Gecko, historically classified as Ptychozoon kuhli and more recently reclassified within the genus Gekko as Gekko kuhli, is an arboreal gecko native to the tropical and subtropical rainforests of Southeast Asia. Its range extends across a broad swath of the region, encompassing peninsular Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, Indonesia (particularly Sumatra, Borneo, and Java), and portions of the Philippines. Within this range, the species occupies primary and secondary lowland rainforest, where it spends virtually its entire life cycle on the trunks and branches of large trees. The dense, humid canopy environments it favors provide both the insect prey base and the vertical surfaces essential to its survival.
The most immediately striking feature of the Flying Gecko is its elaborate system of cutaneous flaps and membranes. Lateral folds of skin extend along both sides of the body, from the neck to the base of the tail, while additional webbing connects the toes and flanks the limbs. A broad, flattened tail with scalloped or lobed edges completes the apparatus. When the gecko launches itself from a tree trunk or branch, it spreads these membranes to create a broad, roughly planar surface that dramatically increases air resistance and allows controlled gliding descents. The animal does not achieve powered flight in any sense; rather, it parachutes or glides at a steep angle, using subtle adjustments of limb and tail position to modulate direction. This adaptation serves primarily as a predator evasion strategy, enabling rapid vertical escape when a snake, bird, or other predator approaches along the trunk.
Beyond its gliding apparatus, the Flying Gecko possesses exceptional cryptic coloration. Its dorsal surface is mottled in patterns of gray, brown, and tan that closely match the bark and lichen of the tree species it inhabits. When pressed flat against a trunk with its dermal flaps spread, the gecko eliminates virtually all shadow along its body outline, rendering itself nearly invisible to visual predators. This combination of passive camouflage and active escape through gliding represents a dual-strategy defense system that is among the most sophisticated found in any gecko species.
Ecologically, the Flying Gecko is a nocturnal insectivore. It emerges at dusk to hunt moths, crickets, beetles, and other invertebrates attracted to the warm, humid surfaces of rainforest trees. Its large eyes, typical of nocturnal gecko species, provide excellent low-light vision, while its toe pads — equipped with the lamellae characteristic of the family Gekkonidae — allow it to traverse vertical and even inverted surfaces with ease. The species is generally solitary, with males maintaining loosely defined territories on individual trees or clusters of trees. Females deposit pairs of hard-shelled eggs on bark surfaces or in sheltered crevices, and the young receive no parental care after oviposition.
