The Chahoua Gecko (Mniarogekko chahoua) is a large-bodied, semi-arboreal gecko endemic to New Caledonia, a French overseas territory composed of a main island (Grande Terre) and several smaller island groups located in the southwestern Pacific Ocean roughly 1,200 kilometers east of Australia. The species inhabits the dense, humid tropical and subtropical forests that blanket the mountainous interior and coastal slopes of Grande Terre, as well as the forests of the Isle of Pines (Ile des Pins) to the south. Within these habitats, the Chahoua Gecko is found on tree trunks, within hollow branches, beneath loose bark, and among moss-covered canopy structures that provide both camouflage and foraging opportunities.
New Caledonia is recognized as one of the world's most significant biodiversity hotspots, harboring an extraordinary concentration of endemic flora and fauna shaped by tens of millions of years of geographic isolation. The island fragment separated from the ancient supercontinent Gondwana approximately 85 million years ago, and the lineages that persisted and diversified on its landmass evolved in near-complete isolation from the rest of Australasia. The gecko fauna of New Caledonia is a product of this isolation, exhibiting a level of species-level endemism that is remarkable even by island-biogeography standards. The Chahoua Gecko shares its home with a suite of related diplodactylid geckos, including the Crested Gecko, the Gargoyle Gecko, and the largest living gecko species, Leachianus.
Ecologically, the Chahoua Gecko occupies a niche as a nocturnal, omnivorous canopy dweller. In the wild, it feeds on a combination of insects, spiders, small invertebrates, and the soft fruits, nectar, and pollen of native plants. This mixed diet is characteristic of several New Caledonian gecko species and represents an ecological strategy uncommon among geckos globally. The species possesses a fully prehensile tail, a trait that aids in arboreal locomotion and provides an additional point of contact when navigating thin branches and vine tangles. Unlike the Crested Gecko, the Chahoua Gecko can regenerate its tail after autotomy, though the regenerated structure differs in scale arrangement and shape from the original.
The common name Chahoua derives from the species' original scientific epithet, which itself has roots in a local Kanak language term for the animal. The species is also frequently referred to as the Mossy New Caledonian Gecko, a name that alludes to the lichen-like mottling and textured scalation that allows the animal to blend seamlessly with the bark and moss of its forest habitat. This camouflage is so effective that wild specimens are notoriously difficult to locate, even for experienced herpetologists working within the species' known range.
