The Rose-Breasted Cockatoo (Eolophus roseicapilla), commonly known as the Galah, is endemic to the Australian continent. It is the sole member of its genus, a taxonomic distinction that reflects its unique evolutionary position among the cockatoos of the family Cacatuidae. The species inhabits virtually every corner of mainland Australia, from the arid interior and semi-arid scrublands to coastal agricultural zones and the fringes of major metropolitan areas. Its adaptability to a wide range of environmental conditions has made it one of the most abundant and widely distributed parrots on the continent.
In its natural habitat, the Rose-Breasted Cockatoo favors open landscapes including grasslands, savannas, lightly timbered woodland, and farmland. It feeds primarily on the ground, foraging for seeds from native grasses, cereal crops, herbs, and occasionally insect larvae. This ground-feeding behavior sets it apart from many other cockatoo species that rely more heavily on arboreal food sources. Large flocks are a common sight across rural Australia, where groups of several hundred birds may descend on grain fields or gather along roadsides and in paddocks.
The species nests in tree hollows, typically selecting cavities in eucalyptus trees along watercourses or in scattered woodland remnants. Both parents participate in incubation and chick-rearing, a cooperative breeding strategy common among cockatoos. Breeding pairs are strongly bonded and often return to the same nesting hollow year after year. Competition for suitable hollows can be intense, and Galahs will readily displace smaller parrot species and occasionally contest hollows with other cockatoos.
Ecologically, the Rose-Breasted Cockatoo has benefited enormously from the transformation of the Australian landscape. European settlement brought land clearing and the establishment of pastoral and grain-growing agriculture, both of which created vast tracts of open habitat with abundant food. The species expanded its range significantly over the 19th and 20th centuries, moving into regions of southeastern and southwestern Australia where it had historically been scarce or absent. This range expansion stands in sharp contrast to the population declines experienced by many other Australian parrot species during the same period.
