The zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata) is native to the arid and semi-arid regions of Australia, where it thrives across grasslands, open woodlands, and scrubby plains. A second subspecies, the Timor zebra finch (T. guttata guttata), inhabits the Lesser Sunda Islands of Indonesia and was actually described before the more familiar Australian form.
