A rabbit who was previously litter trained and starts having accidents outside the box may be experiencing early nerve damage rather than a behavioral change.

Postural changes tell you a lot about what your rabbit is feeling. A rabbit with hind limb weakness often shifts their weight forward onto their front legs, creating a hunched appearance. Pain management is a critical piece of the puzzle regardless of the underlying cause. Rabbits in pain move less, eat less, and decline faster. Meloxicam is the most commonly prescribed pain medication for rabbits and is generally well tolerated for long-term use. Gabapentin may be added for nerve pain specifically. Tramadol is sometimes used for more severe pain. Your vet needs to assess and manage pain as an ongoing part of care, not just during acute episodes.

The wheelchair decision typically comes after treatment has been attempted and the vet has a reasonable picture of whether function is likely to return. If your rabbit has been stable with little or no hind leg function for several weeks despite treatment, and deep pain sensation testing suggests the damage is permanent, that is when a wheelchair becomes the practical next step. Once your rabbit is using a wheelchair, regular vet checkups become even more important. Your vet should evaluate skin condition, bladder function, weight, and overall quality of life at least every three to four months, or more frequently if problems arise. Any signs of urine scald that is not responding to home care, repeated urinary tract infections, pressure sores, significant weight loss, or a rabbit who seems consistently distressed in or out of the wheelchair all need prompt veterinary attention.
