A rabbit from a shelter, rescue, pet store, or breeder may carry mites without showing obvious signs, especially if the infestation is early or the rabbit has been recently stressed by relocation. This is one of the reasons quarantining new rabbits in a separate space for two to three weeks before introducing them to existing pets is so important. That quarantine period gives you time to observe for developing symptoms before mites have a chance to spread.

Environmental conditions play a role in how quickly mite populations grow and how severely they affect your rabbit. Damp, dirty, or crowded living conditions favor mite survival and reproduction. Bedding that is not changed regularly can harbor mites and their eggs, creating a cycle of reinfestation even after the rabbit has been treated. Outdoor rabbits are at higher risk because they may encounter wild rabbits or contaminated ground. Hay and straw sourced from farms with animal populations can occasionally carry mites into your home, though this is less common than direct animal contact.

Immune status determines whether a small mite exposure becomes a clinical problem or gets controlled naturally. Healthy rabbits with strong immune systems can sometimes manage a low-level mite population without developing obvious symptoms. Seasonal patterns exist for some mite species, with infestations more common in fall and winter when rabbits may be housed more closely together and when environmental conditions favor mite survival. The exposed skin may be red, inflamed, and covered with thick, yellowish or grayish crusts that look like scabs but are actually a buildup of mite debris, dried serum, and dead skin cells. These crusts can become quite thick and are often painful to the touch. Do not attempt to pull or peel them off, as this tears the damaged skin underneath and causes bleeding and pain.

Ear mange from Psoroptes mites produces distinctive symptoms that are hard to miss once they develop. The inside of the ear fills with thick, brown, waxy crusts that can eventually obstruct the ear canal. Affected rabbits shake their heads frequently, scratch at their ears, and may tilt their head toward the more severely affected side. The ears may feel hot to the touch from inflammation. In advanced cases, the infection can spread from the outer ear into the middle and inner ear, causing balance problems and permanent hearing damage.

Behavioral changes accompany the physical symptoms. A rabbit with mange becomes restless, spending more time scratching and less time eating, playing, or resting normally. The constant itching disrupts sleep cycles, leaving your rabbit tired and irritable. Some rabbits become resistant to being picked up or handled because touch on affected areas is painful. Others may become unusually withdrawn, sitting in one spot rather than engaging with their environment. Any notable personality change combined with skin or ear symptoms should prompt you to look more closely.

Secondary infections from scratching create additional symptoms on top of the mite damage. Open wounds from aggressive scratching invite bacterial infections that produce swelling, heat, discharge, and a foul smell. An infected skin wound may weep or develop pus. Fly strike becomes a risk when open wounds or matted, soiled fur attract flies to lay eggs. If you see any sign of secondary infection - swelling, discharge, odor, or visible maggot activity - your rabbit needs veterinary attention promptly because these complications can escalate rapidly.

Section 4 Diagnosis And Treatment

Veterinary diagnosis of mange typically involves a skin scraping, where your vet uses a blade to gently scrape the surface of the affected skin and examines the collected material under a microscope. Mites, their eggs, and their fecal matter are usually visible in the sample, confirming both the diagnosis and the specific mite species involved. For ear mites, your vet may examine ear debris under magnification. Occasionally, skin scrapings come back negative even when mites are present because the sample missed the area where mites are concentrated. The treatment of choice for most mange in rabbits is ivermectin or a related medication in the avermectin family, typically given as an injection under the skin. Revolution, a topical medication containing selamectin, is another effective treatment that your vet may prescribe. Applied to the skin at the back of the neck, it absorbs systemically and kills mites through the same mechanism as ivermectin. Some vets prefer Revolution because it also treats ear mites, fleas, and some intestinal parasites simultaneously. The topical application can be easier for owners who are uncomfortable giving injections, though many vets administer the injections in the office during treatment visits.

Crust removal should be done gently and only after treatment has begun to work. Soaking affected areas with warm water softens the crusts and allows them to loosen naturally over several days. Do not force crusts off dry skin. Your vet may prescribe a topical antiseptic or soothing cream for areas where skin is raw or infected underneath the crusts. For ear mange, your vet may clean the ears under sedation if the crust buildup is severe, or may advise letting the medication work and allowing the crusts to fall away on their own as the mites die.

Secondary bacterial infections require antibiotics in addition to mite treatment. Your vet will select an appropriate antibiotic based on the severity and location of the infection. Wound care at home may involve cleaning affected areas with a veterinary-approved antiseptic and applying prescribed topical treatments. Pain management with an anti-inflammatory like meloxicam helps your rabbit feel more comfortable during recovery, which supports eating and normal behavior.

Recovery from mange is usually complete and satisfying to watch. Within days of the first treatment, you will notice reduced scratching as the mites begin to die. Over the following weeks, crusts soften and fall away, hair begins to regrow, and your rabbit's behavior returns to normal. Full hair regrowth may take four to eight weeks depending on how extensive the damage was. Follow through with all scheduled treatment doses even if your rabbit looks better after the first one, because stopping early allows surviving mites to repopulate.

Section 5 Home Care Prevention

Environmental decontamination is essential alongside treating your rabbit, because mites surviving in bedding, fabric, or the living space will reinfest a treated rabbit. Wash all bedding, blankets, and fabric items in hot water. Discard and replace any straw, hay bedding, or cardboard items from the living area. Thoroughly clean the enclosure with a veterinary-safe disinfectant. Repeat this cleaning at each treatment dose to break the reinfestation cycle. If your rabbit free-roams, vacuum carpeted areas thoroughly and consider restricting access to upholstered furniture until treatment is complete.

Keep your affected rabbit comfortable during treatment by providing soft, clean bedding that does not irritate damaged skin. Fleece liners work well because they are soft, washable, and do not stick to wounds the way loose bedding materials might. Ensure the recovery space is warm enough, since rabbits with significant hair loss may struggle to regulate body temperature. A heating pad set to low under one section of the enclosure gives your rabbit the option to seek warmth without overheating.

Prevention starts with quarantining any new rabbit for two to three weeks before introducing them to your existing animals. During quarantine, watch for scratching, flaking, hair loss, or ear crusting. A veterinary wellness exam during this period can catch problems that are not yet showing obvious symptoms. If you handle rabbits outside your home, whether at shows, rescues, or friends' houses, change your clothes and wash your hands before handling your own rabbits.

Regular visual checks of your rabbit's skin, ears, and coat catch problems early when they are easiest to treat. Part the fur in a few spots weekly to look at the skin underneath. Check the inside of both ears for any crusting or dark waxy buildup. Run your hands over the body feeling for rough patches, scabs, or areas where fur seems thin. These thirty-second checks become automatic once they are part of your routine and can save your rabbit weeks of discomfort by catching an infestation before it spreads.

Maintaining a clean living environment year-round is the most effective long-term prevention strategy. Regular bedding changes, enclosure cleaning, and hay that comes from reputable sources reduce the chances of mite introduction. Keep your rabbit's immune system strong through proper diet with plenty of hay, appropriate space for exercise, and minimal stress. A healthy rabbit with a functioning immune system is far more capable of resisting mite infestations than one who is already compromised by poor husbandry or other health issues.

Section 6 When To See Vet

See your vet within a day or two if you notice persistent scratching combined with any visible skin changes including flaking, hair loss, redness, or crusting. Mange does not resolve on its own and will only get worse without treatment. Early cases respond quickly and completely to medication, while advanced cases require longer treatment, more veterinary visits, and more suffering for your rabbit. There is no benefit to waiting when the symptoms point to mites.

Seek same-day care if your rabbit has developed open wounds from scratching, if you see signs of secondary infection like swelling, discharge, or foul smell, or if ear symptoms are severe enough that your rabbit is losing balance or holding their head persistently tilted. Fly strike associated with mange wounds is a genuine emergency requiring immediate professional treatment. Any maggot activity on your rabbit means you need a vet right now, not tomorrow.

A rabbit-savvy vet is particularly important for mange treatment because the dosing of ivermectin and other antiparasitic medications must be precise for rabbits. Overdosing can cause neurological toxicity, and underdosing fails to clear the infestation. A vet experienced with rabbits knows the correct dosing, the right treatment intervals, and how to manage the complications that sometimes accompany severe cases. They also know which topical products that are safe for dogs or cats are dangerous for rabbits.

If your rabbit has been treated and symptoms are not improving after the second treatment dose, go back to the vet. Persistent symptoms may indicate a misidentified mite species requiring a different medication, a secondary infection that needs separate treatment, or an underlying immune problem that is preventing your rabbit from responding normally.
