Kidney involvement is more subtle and often goes undetected for a long time. EC damages kidney tissue gradually, and you may notice your rabbit drinking more water than usual or producing more dilute urine. Over months or years, this chronic low-level kidney damage can progress to kidney disease. Many rabbits that show kidney problems in their senior years may have been dealing with EC-related damage all along without anyone knowing.
Eye involvement typically shows up as a white growth or cloudiness inside the eye, called a phacoclastic uveitis. This happens when EC spores that were deposited in the lens during development rupture and trigger an immune response inside the eye. It is not painful in the early stages, but the inflammation can progress and sometimes the affected eye needs to be removed if it becomes a source of chronic pain or infection.
Milder symptoms that may indicate early or low-level EC activity include hind leg weakness, occasional loss of coordination, urinary incontinence, and a general decline in energy or appetite. These signs are easy to attribute to aging or other causes, which is why EC often flies under the radar until a dramatic episode forces the issue. Pay attention to subtle changes in how your rabbit moves and behaves, because catching EC early significantly improves outcomes. A rabbit that seems slightly off balance after a jump or takes an extra moment to right itself after flopping may be showing the very earliest signs of neurological involvement.

Diagnosing EC with certainty is one of the more frustrating aspects of dealing with this parasite. Reducing inflammation can produce rapid improvement in head tilt and balance issues, sometimes within days of starting treatment. Some vets also prescribe a short course of corticosteroids for severe cases, though opinions on this approach vary.
Supportive care during treatment is just as important as the medications. A rabbit that cannot stand or walk needs to be kept in a padded enclosure to prevent injury from rolling or falling. They need help reaching food and water, and many will require syringe feeding during the worst of the episode. Keeping them warm, calm, and in a quiet space reduces stress that could further compromise their immune response.
The response to treatment varies enormously between individual rabbits. Some improve dramatically within the first week and return to near-normal function. Others improve slowly over weeks or months. And some are left with permanent neurological effects like a residual head tilt or mild coordination issues. The speed and completeness of recovery depend largely on how much damage occurred before treatment started, which is why getting veterinary care quickly matters so much.

If your rabbit is going through an active EC episode, your role at home is to keep them safe, fed, and as calm as possible while the medications do their work. In multi-rabbit households, complete prevention of EC transmission is nearly impossible since so many rabbits already carry it. Focus instead on keeping all your rabbits healthy and their immune systems strong. There is no vaccine for EC, and routine treatment of healthy rabbits with fenbendazole is not currently recommended by most veterinary specialists.
