Avoid fin nippers like tiger barbs, aggressive fish like cichlids, and very active fish that might stress the betta. Shrimp and snails can work though bettas may eat smaller shrimp.

For sororities, avoid adding other fish initially until the female betta hierarchy is established. Once stable, you can carefully add peaceful bottom-dwellers or schooling fish that occupy different areas of the tank. Avoid adding more female bettas to an established sorority since this disrupts the hierarchy and often triggers fighting. Never add male bettas to sororities since males are aggressive toward females outside of breeding.

Breeding behavior occurs when a male and female are introduced for spawning. The male builds a bubble nest at the surface and courts the female with displays. Spawning involves the male wrapping around the female as she releases eggs, which he then collects and places in the bubble nest. After spawning, the male becomes aggressive toward the female and she must be removed. Velvet disease looks like gold or rust-colored dust on the fish and is caused by a dinoflagellate parasite. It's highly contagious and can kill quickly if untreated. Treatment involves complete darkness for several days combined with medications containing copper. Swim bladder problems cause fish to float, sink, or swim sideways due to buoyancy issues. Causes include overfeeding, constipation, or bacterial infection. Treatment starts with fasting and feeding peas.

Signs of good health in female bettas include active swimming, strong appetite, bright eyes, smooth fins without tears or white edges, and vibrant coloration. Healthy bettas hold their fins erect rather than clamped against the body and breathe regularly at the surface without gasping. They investigate their environment and react to movement outside the tank. Healthy bettas have smooth body contours without bloating or emaciation.

Preventive care centers on maintaining excellent water quality with regular weekly water changes of 25-30 percent, appropriate filtration, and stable parameters. Test water regularly for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrates, keeping ammonia and nitrite at zero and nitrates below 20 ppm. In sororities, monitor for aggression daily and remove excessively aggressive individuals or victims showing severe stress.
