A secure lid is non-negotiable - bettas jump, particularly when startled or stressed, and a betta out of water is a serious emergency. Any gap large enough for the fish to fit through is a risk.

Bettas are surface-feeding insectivores in the wild, eating mosquito larvae, small crustaceans, water fleas, and tiny aquatic invertebrates. Avoid pellets where wheat, soy, or corn fillers dominate the ingredient list - these are cheap calories that bettas cannot utilize efficiently. Two to three appropriately sized pellets twice daily serves most adult bettas well. The fish's stomach is roughly the size of its eye, which keeps portion expectations realistic.

Frozen foods add variety and nutritional depth that no single pellet can provide. Bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia, and mysis shrimp are all excellent supplemental choices. Daphnia in particular is worth keeping in regular rotation because its high fiber content supports digestive health and helps prevent constipation - a common issue in pellet-fed bettas. Live foods like brine shrimp nauplii or wingless fruit flies provide enrichment through hunting behavior alongside nutritional benefits. Freeze-dried options are shelf-stable and convenient but should be pre-soaked briefly to prevent gut expansion.

Overfeeding causes more health problems in bettas than underfeeding. Excess food fouls water quality and excess consumption leads to bloating, constipation, and swim bladder dysfunction. One fasting day per week is standard practice among experienced betta keepers and gives the digestive system time to clear completely. If your betta looks bloated or is producing long trailing feces, you are likely feeding too much or relying too heavily on dried foods without soaking.

Diet quality shows up visually in bettas faster than in almost any other freshwater species. A well-fed betta on a varied, protein-rich diet displays intense coloration, active fin display, and engaged behavior. A poorly fed betta looks washed out, lethargic, and disinterested. Upgrading nutrition is one of the fastest and most visible improvements you can make to a betta's quality of life.

Bettas are territorial, intelligent, and interactive in ways that surprise people who think of fish as passive decorations. This is not a quirk that proper tank design can overcome - it is hardwired territorial behavior reinforced by centuries of selective breeding for fighting. Females are less dramatically aggressive but still territorial, and their social dynamics are more complex than simply being peaceful. Female bettas establish pecking orders through displays and occasional physical confrontation. Individual temperament varies widely in both sexes, and some bettas of either gender are significantly more aggressive or more tolerant than average.

In community settings, bettas can coexist with peaceful species that do not trigger their territorial instincts. Good tankmate choices include corydoras catfish, small rasboras like harlequins or chili rasboras, ember tetras, nerite snails, and amano shrimp. These species occupy different areas of the tank, lack the visual triggers that provoke betta aggression, and are peaceful enough not to harass the betta in return. A 10-gallon tank is the practical minimum for a betta community.

Avoid housing bettas with guppies or other long-finned fish that males mistake for rivals, fin-nipping species like tiger barbs that will destroy betta finnage, aggressive cichlids that outmatch bettas physically, and goldfish that require different temperatures and produce waste loads beyond what betta-sized filtration handles. The common suggestion to keep bettas with goldfish persists despite being bad advice on multiple levels.

Breeding behavior changes the social equation entirely. A male betta building and guarding a bubble nest becomes more aggressive toward everything in the tank, not just potential rivals. Spawning involves physical contact that can injure both fish if the female is not receptive, and post-spawn nest guarding escalates territorial behavior significantly. Breeding should happen in dedicated setups, not community tanks.

Velvet presents as a fine golden dust most visible under angled light and requires prompt attention because it progresses rapidly. Swim bladder issues cause buoyancy problems and are usually linked to overfeeding or constipation. Dropsy - characterized by severely bloated body and pinecone-like scale protrusion - indicates organ failure and carries a poor prognosis by the time symptoms appear. The common thread is that most of these conditions are preventable through consistent basic care.

A healthy betta tells you it is healthy through every aspect of its appearance and behavior. Vivid coloration, fully spread fins, smooth scales, clear eyes, responsive behavior, and a strong appetite are the baseline markers. Deviations from that baseline - clamped fins, color loss, lethargy, appetite changes, unusual swimming patterns, visible spots or lesions - are signals that warrant investigation starting with a water parameter test.

Prevention is not complicated but it demands consistency. Keep the water between 76 and 82 degrees without fluctuation. Change 25 to 30 percent of the water weekly. Feed appropriate portions of quality food. Maintain the nitrogen cycle with adequate filtration. Quarantine new additions for two weeks before introducing them. Reduce stress by providing cover, maintaining stable conditions, and avoiding sudden environmental changes. These practices are not extraordinary - they are the basics done reliably.

When health problems appear, act quickly and start with water quality. Test ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate immediately. Perform a water change if any parameters are off.
