Operating a heat mat, ceramic heat emitter, or radiant heat panel without thermostat regulation is an invitation to thermal burns, heat stress, and death — the unregulated surface temperature of a heat mat can exceed one hundred and twenty degrees Fahrenheit, a temperature that will kill any snake in sustained contact.
Proportional thermostats are the gold standard for reptile enclosure temperature management. Unlike simple on-off thermostats that cycle the heating element between full power and zero power based on whether the temperature is above or below the set point, proportional thermostats continuously adjust the power output to maintain a steady temperature with minimal fluctuation.
