Enclosure Size & Type

Kenyan Sand Boas are relatively small, ground-dwelling snakes that do not require tall enclosures or expansive floor space. An adult can be comfortably housed in a ten to twenty gallon tank, depending on the individual's size. Females, which tend to be larger and heavier than males, generally do better in the upper end of that range, while a smaller male may thrive in a more compact setup. Prioritize floor space over height, since this species has no climbing instincts and spends nearly all of its time at or below substrate level.

Glass terrariums with secure screen tops are the most popular enclosure choice and work well as long as you manage humidity and heat retention carefully. The screen lid allows excellent ventilation, which is important for a species that prefers dry conditions, but it also allows heat to escape quickly, so your heating setup needs to compensate. Front-opening enclosures are another excellent option that reduces the stress of reaching in from above, which can startle a burrowing snake.

Plastic tub setups are widely used by breeders and experienced keepers who maintain multiple animals. They retain heat and humidity more effectively than glass, are lightweight, easy to clean, and significantly less expensive. The tradeoff is reduced visibility and the need to drill or melt ventilation holes yourself. For a single pet, either a glass terrarium or a well-ventilated plastic tub will serve the snake perfectly well.

Regardless of enclosure type, security is paramount. Kenyan Sand Boas are surprisingly strong for their size and can push through loose-fitting lids or gaps in enclosure hardware. Make sure all openings are sealed, clips or locks are in place, and there are no gaps wider than the snake's head. An escaped Sand Boa can be very difficult to locate because of its small size and instinct to burrow into tight spaces.

Substrate & Burrowing Setup

Substrate selection is arguably the most important housing decision for a Kenyan Sand Boa, because this species is a dedicated burrower that spends the majority of its life beneath the surface. The substrate needs to be deep enough for the snake to fully submerge, loose enough to tunnel through easily, and dry enough to prevent respiratory or skin infections. A depth of three to four inches is a good starting point for adults, with slightly less for juveniles.

Aspen shavings are one of the most widely recommended substrates for this species. They are lightweight, easy to burrow through, affordable, and simple to spot-clean. Aspen holds tunnel shapes reasonably well, allowing the snake to create semi-permanent pathways beneath the surface. Avoid cedar and pine shavings, as these contain aromatic oils that are toxic to reptiles and can cause respiratory damage even with brief exposure.

Sand and soil mixtures designed specifically for burrowing reptiles can also work well and provide a more naturalistic aesthetic. A blend of clean, fine-grain play sand mixed with organic topsoil creates a substrate that holds tunnels, mimics the snake's native habitat, and looks attractive in a display enclosure. The key is to keep this mixture completely dry, as damp sand-soil blends can harbor bacteria and mold that thrive in warm enclosure temperatures.

Avoid substrates that are dusty, sharp-edged, or prone to compaction. Calcium sand, crushed walnut shells, and gravel are all poor choices for Sand Boas. Calcium sand can cause impaction if ingested, walnut shells can scratch delicate belly scales, and gravel is impossible to burrow through. Whatever substrate you choose, plan on doing a full replacement every four to six weeks, with spot-cleaning in between to remove waste and soiled patches.

Heating & Temperature Gradient

A proper thermal gradient is essential for Kenyan Sand Boa health and digestion. The warm end of the enclosure should sit between ninety and ninety-five degrees Fahrenheit at the substrate surface, while the cool end should remain in the upper seventies to low eighties. This range allows the snake to thermoregulate by moving between zones as needed, which is critical for metabolic processes including digestion and immune function.

Under-tank heat mats are the most commonly used heating element for Sand Boas, and they align well with this species' ground-dwelling lifestyle. The mat should cover roughly one-third of the enclosure floor on the warm side. Because the snake burrows into substrate that sits directly above the heat source, it is absolutely essential to use a thermostat to regulate the mat's output. Without a thermostat, heat mats can reach dangerously high temperatures and cause severe thermal burns, even through several inches of substrate.

Overhead heating elements such as ceramic heat emitters or radiant heat panels are viable alternatives or supplements, particularly in enclosures where under-tank heating alone cannot maintain adequate temperatures. These work especially well in deeper substrate setups or in rooms with low ambient temperatures. If using an overhead heat source, make sure it is positioned outside the enclosure or behind a guard to prevent the snake from making direct contact.

Nighttime temperature drops of a few degrees are natural and generally well-tolerated, but the warm side should not dip below eighty-five degrees even after dark. Monitoring temperatures at the substrate surface level, not just the ambient air, gives you the most accurate picture of what the snake actually experiences. A digital thermometer with a probe placed at substrate level on the warm side is an indispensable tool for any Sand Boa enclosure.

Humidity & Ventilation

Kenyan Sand Boas originate from the arid regions of East Africa and require low humidity in captivity, generally between thirty and forty percent. Excessive moisture is one of the most common causes of health problems in this species, leading to scale rot, respiratory infections, and blister disease. A well-ventilated enclosure with dry substrate will naturally maintain appropriate humidity levels in most indoor environments.

Screen-top enclosures provide excellent airflow and tend to keep humidity low, which is one reason they are so popular for this species. If you live in a particularly humid climate, you may need to take additional steps such as running a dehumidifier in the room, choosing a more absorbent substrate, or increasing ventilation. Avoid misting the enclosure or placing large water dishes that increase evaporation, as even minor humidity spikes can compound over time.

During shedding periods, a temporary bump in humidity can help the snake complete its shed cleanly. Providing a small, enclosed humid hide filled with damp sphagnum moss on the cool side of the enclosure gives the snake access to moisture when it needs it without raising the overall humidity of the habitat. This targeted approach is far safer than misting the entire enclosure or saturating the substrate.

Ventilation also plays a role in preventing stale air and the buildup of ammonia from waste. Even in a tub-style enclosure, adequate airflow is important. Drill ventilation holes on opposite sides of the tub to promote cross-ventilation, and make sure the enclosure is not sealed so tightly that condensation forms on the interior surfaces. If you see persistent fogging on the glass or tub walls, your ventilation is insufficient.

Hides & Interior Layout

Despite being burrowers that spend most of their time underground, Kenyan Sand Boas still benefit from surface-level hides placed on both the warm and cool sides of the enclosure. These hides provide an additional sense of security when the snake surfaces, which encourages natural behavior and reduces stress. Hides should be snug-fitting, with just enough room for the snake to coil inside comfortably. An oversized hide defeats its purpose because the snake will not feel adequately concealed.

Half-log hides, resin caves, and inverted ceramic dishes all work well. Some keepers partially bury hides so the entrance sits flush with or slightly below the substrate surface, which creates a more natural transition from burrowing to hiding. This approach also gives the snake the option of tunneling directly into the hide from below, which aligns with its instinctive behavior in the wild.

Keep the interior layout relatively simple. Kenyan Sand Boas are not climbers and do not need branches, vines, or elevated platforms. Overdecorating the enclosure can actually make maintenance more difficult and create spaces where waste accumulates unseen. A warm hide, a cool hide, a water dish, and a generous depth of substrate are the core components of a functional Sand Boa habitat.

If you want to add visual interest to a display enclosure, low-profile decorations like flat stones, artificial succulents, or pieces of cork bark laid on the substrate surface can create an attractive arid landscape without compromising functionality. Just make sure any decorations are stable and cannot topple onto the snake as it tunnels beneath them. Lightweight decorations that shift with the substrate are generally safer than heavy items resting on the surface.

Cleaning & Maintenance

Routine enclosure maintenance for a Kenyan Sand Boa is straightforward, thanks in part to the species' relatively infrequent feeding and waste production. Spot-cleaning should be done as soon as you notice waste deposits, shed skin, or soiled patches of substrate. With aspen bedding, you can simply scoop out the affected area and replace it with fresh shavings. With sand-soil mixes, a small sifting scoop works well for removing solid waste without displacing the entire substrate.

A full substrate change should be performed every four to six weeks, depending on the enclosure size and how quickly the substrate becomes soiled or compressed. During a full change, remove the snake to a secure temporary container, empty the enclosure completely, and wipe down all interior surfaces with a reptile-safe disinfectant. Rinse thoroughly and allow everything to dry before adding fresh substrate and returning the hides and water dish.

The water dish should be cleaned and refilled with fresh water every two to three days, or immediately if the snake defecates in it, which happens occasionally. Use a small, heavy dish that resists tipping, and position it on the cool side of the enclosure to minimize evaporation and humidity. Ceramic dishes are ideal because they are easy to sanitize and heavy enough to stay in place even when the snake burrows around them.

Inspect the enclosure hardware and lid security during each full cleaning. Clips can loosen over time, screen tops can develop small tears, and heat mat cords can become frayed with age. Catching these issues during routine maintenance prevents escapes and safety hazards. A well-maintained enclosure is not just cleaner for the snake but also extends the life of your equipment and reduces the likelihood of costly replacements.
