Hydration is a frequently underestimated element of Red Rat Snake nutrition. While these snakes derive some moisture from their prey, they also drink regularly from standing water sources. A clean, appropriately sized water bowl should be available at all times, refreshed every one to two days, and positioned on the cool side of the enclosure where it is less likely to elevate humidity beyond the species' preferred range of forty to sixty percent. Dehydrated Red Rat Snakes digest less efficiently, produce urates that are chalky rather than soft, and may experience difficulty shedding, all of which are early indicators that fluid intake is insufficient.
