The Mussurana is a large, rear-fanged colubrid renowned throughout Central and South America for its specialized diet of other snakes, including venomous pit vipers. In the wild, Clelia clelia is an obligate ophiophage during much of its adult life, consuming lancehead vipers, coral snakes, and various harmless colubrids with remarkable efficiency. This dietary specialization presents a unique nutritional context for captive keepers, because the nutritional profile delivered by a whole snake as prey differs subtly from that of mammalian prey in its calcium-to-phosphorus ratio, fat distribution, and organ composition. Understanding these differences is fundamental to maintaining a Mussurana in optimal health over its fifteen-to-twenty-year captive lifespan.
In captivity, sustaining a Mussurana on a diet of live or frozen snakes is impractical for the vast majority of keepers. The expense, ethical concerns, and sourcing difficulties associated with raising feeder snakes make this approach untenable as a long-term strategy. Fortunately, most captive-bred Mussuranas accept rodent prey readily, and wild-caught specimens can usually be transitioned to rodents with patience. Whole rodents provide a nutritionally complete food source that delivers protein, fat, calcium from the skeleton, and organ-derived micronutrients in proportions that sustain healthy growth and maintenance in colubrid snakes.
Caloric requirements for the Mussurana are moderate compared to giant constrictors but still demand careful management. An adult Mussurana in the five-to-seven-foot range is a muscular, active hunter that maintains a higher metabolic rate than many sedentary ambush-predator species. Overfeeding leads to obesity and associated liver problems, while underfeeding results in muscle wasting and immune suppression. The goal is a snake that feels firm and well-muscled along its length without visible fat deposits or a rounded cross-section.
Hydration plays an essential role in the Mussurana's nutritional health. This species originates from humid tropical and subtropical habitats where access to fresh water is consistent year-round. Captive Mussuranas require a clean water source large enough to drink from comfortably and, ideally, to soak in periodically. Adequate hydration supports efficient digestion, healthy kidney function, and smooth shedding cycles. A dehydrated Mussurana digests prey sluggishly and becomes more susceptible to uric acid accumulation and renal complications over time.
