A properly selected water dish is one of the most important accessories in a Mandarin Rat Snake enclosure, serving dual roles as a hydration source and as a humidity reservoir that contributes to the moisture levels this montane species requires. The water dish should be heavy enough that the snake cannot tip it during normal movement, large enough for the animal to submerge a portion of its body during pre-shed soaking, and shallow enough that there is no risk of drowning. Ceramic crocks designed for reptile use meet all three criteria and are available in sizes appropriate for every life stage of the Mandarin Rat Snake. A dish with an interior diameter of four to six inches and a depth of one to two inches suits most adult specimens comfortably.
Placement of the water dish within the enclosure influences both humidity and temperature dynamics. Positioning the dish on the warm side of the enclosure increases evaporation and contributes to ambient humidity, which is advantageous in enclosures where humidity runs below the target sixty-to-seventy-percent range. Conversely, placing the dish on the cool side minimizes evaporation and provides the snake with access to cooler water that may be preferred during warmer months. Some keepers maintain two water sources — one on each side — to give the snake continuous access regardless of where it is resting in the enclosure and to maximize the humidity contribution from evaporation.
Soaking containers are a supplemental accessory used primarily during the pre-shed period, when the snake's skin becomes opaque and dull as the new skin layer develops beneath the old one. A shallow plastic container with a secure lid and an entry hole cut into one side creates an enclosed humid chamber that the snake can enter voluntarily. Lining the interior with damp paper towels or sphagnum moss and placing the container on the cool side of the enclosure provides a high-humidity microenvironment that supports clean, complete shedding. Many Mandarin Rat Snakes use the soaking container as an alternative hide, spending extended periods inside during the pre-shed phase.
Water quality is a detail that is easy to overlook but directly impacts the snake's health. Municipal tap water treated with chlorine or chloramine should be dechlorinated before use, either by allowing it to sit uncovered for twenty-four hours, which dissipates free chlorine, or by treating it with a reptile-safe water conditioner that neutralizes both chlorine and chloramine instantly. Water should be refreshed every one to two days and immediately after any contamination event. Biofilm — a slimy bacterial layer that develops on water dish surfaces — should be scrubbed away during each water change using a dedicated brush and periodic disinfection with a reptile-safe solution.
