A reliable water dish is the single most important accessory in any Indian Sand Boa enclosure, yet it is one of the items most frequently chosen poorly by new keepers. The ideal water dish for Eryx johnii must satisfy several competing requirements simultaneously: it must be shallow enough for the snake to drink from comfortably without submerging its head, heavy or stable enough that the snake cannot tip it over during burrowing activity near the dish, sized so that the snake can soak in it if desired without displacing enough water to saturate the surrounding substrate, and made of a non-porous material that resists bacterial biofilm accumulation and can be thoroughly sanitized.
Ceramic crocks designed specifically for reptile use are the preferred choice for most Indian Sand Boa keepers. These dishes are inherently heavy, making them resistant to tipping even when a two-to-three-foot snake pushes against them during subsurface movement. Their glazed interior surfaces are smooth, non-porous, and easy to scrub clean during water changes. Crocks are available in a wide range of sizes, and selecting one with a diameter roughly equal to two-thirds of the snake's coiled body diameter provides adequate drinking and soaking space without creating an oversized water feature that elevates enclosure humidity above the target range for this arid-adapted species.
Plastic water dishes are lightweight and inexpensive but present stability challenges in a sand boa enclosure. A burrowing snake that tunnels beneath a lightweight plastic dish will displace it, spilling water into the substrate and creating a damp zone that can foster bacterial growth and scale rot. If a plastic dish is used, it should be anchored by partially burying its base in compacted substrate or by placing a flat stone beneath it to prevent undermining. Some keepers use suction-cup-mounted dishes designed for small reptiles, but these require a smooth enclosure wall to adhere to and may not be practical in PVC or wooden enclosures with textured surfaces.
Regardless of material, the water dish should be positioned on the cool side of the enclosure. Placing it near the heat source increases evaporation, which elevates humidity, depletes the water supply faster, and can create a persistently damp microzone around the dish that conflicts with the dry substrate environment Indian Sand Boas require. The cool-side placement also ensures that the water temperature remains comfortable for drinking — water heated to enclosure warm-side temperatures may not be as appealing to the snake. A second, smaller backup dish is a worthwhile investment for any keeper, as it allows immediate replacement during cleaning without leaving the enclosure temporarily without water.
