A reliable water dish is the most fundamental accessory in any hognose snake enclosure. The dish should be heavy enough to resist tipping — ceramic and stoneware dishes excel here — and shallow enough that the snake can enter and exit easily without risk of drowning. While adult Eastern Hognose Snakes are not particularly prone to drowning, hatchlings and small juveniles can struggle in water that is too deep. A dish depth of roughly one inch for juveniles and two inches for adults is a practical guideline. The diameter should be large enough for the snake to soak its entire body if it chooses to, as many hognose snakes soak during pre-shed periods.
Humidity management in a hognose snake enclosure requires a lighter touch than for tropical species, but it still demands the right tools. Eastern Hognose Snakes do best at ambient humidity levels between 40 and 60 percent, with access to a humid microclimate for shedding. A quality analog or digital hygrometer mounted at substrate level — not at the top of the enclosure where readings will differ significantly — gives you accurate data to work with. Avoid the small dial-type hygrometers commonly sold in pet stores, as they are notoriously inaccurate and can read 15 to 20 percent off in either direction.
A handheld spray bottle or a pressure sprayer is useful for occasional misting, particularly during shedding periods or in dry climates where ambient humidity drops below 30 percent. Misting should target the substrate rather than the snake directly, allowing moisture to absorb into the lower substrate layers where it will contribute to the humidity gradient without creating standing surface moisture. Excessive surface moisture in a hognose enclosure can promote respiratory infections and scale rot, so misting should be moderate and targeted.
For keepers who want a more automated approach, small reptile foggers and misters can be configured to run on timers, delivering brief bursts of humidity at scheduled intervals. These devices work best in PVC or glass enclosures where humidity is retained more effectively than in screen-topped setups. If you use an automated system, monitor humidity closely during the first week to calibrate the timing and output, and ensure that the enclosure dries out between misting cycles to prevent chronic dampness.
