Rearranging the enclosure layout every few weeks is one of the simplest and most impactful forms of enrichment — moving hides to different positions, changing the orientation of branches, and relocating the water dish all create a novel environment that the snake must re-explore and re-map.

Cardboard tubes from paper towel and toilet paper rolls make surprisingly effective temporary hides and tunnels for garter snakes. They are lightweight, easily replaced, and can be arranged in different configurations to create tunnel networks that the snake will explore. Because they are disposable, they can be discarded and replaced frequently, which contributes to both hygiene and novelty. Ensure any adhesive or printed material on the tubes is minimal and non-toxic.

Small terra cotta plant saucers and pots, available inexpensively at garden centers, serve as sturdy hides, water dishes, and basking platforms. A terra cotta saucer flipped upside down with a doorway chipped into the rim creates a heavy, stable hide that the snake cannot tip over.
