Hooks designed for small colubrids are entirely inadequate — they will bend or snap under the weight and resistance of a large python. Snake tongs serve a supplementary role for directing the snake's head during enclosure maintenance or veterinary procedures, but they should never be used as the primary means of lifting or supporting an African Rock Python. Tongs apply concentrated pressure to a small area of the body and can cause bruising, rib injuries, or internal trauma when used on heavy snakes. If tongs are used at all, they should be gentle-jawed models with rubberized tips, and they should guide rather than grip. The hook remains the appropriate tool for supporting the snake's weight.
A critical safety protocol for handling African Rock Pythons is the two-person minimum rule. No keeper should ever open the enclosure of an African Rock Python exceeding eight feet in length without at least one additional experienced person present. This is not a suggestion — it is a widely recognized safety standard among professional herpetologists and large-constrictor keepers. The second person provides critical assistance if the snake wraps around the primary handler, and they can manage doors, hooks, and transport containers while the handler controls the animal. Solo handling of a large, agitated African Rock Python is one of the most dangerous situations in private reptile keeping.
Heavy-duty leather gloves or Kevlar-reinforced handling gloves offer some protection against bites, though they will not fully prevent the teeth of a large python from penetrating. The primary value of gloves is psychological — they give the handler confidence to maintain a firm, steady grip rather than flinching and releasing at the moment of a strike. Gloves also protect against the superficial scratches and abrasions that occur from the snake's rough scales and powerful muscular contractions during handling.
