Shedding Aids and Skin Care

African Rock Pythons shed their skin periodically throughout their lives, with juveniles shedding more frequently than adults due to their rapid growth rate. A healthy shed comes off in a single, intact piece and indicates that the snake's hydration, humidity, and overall health are properly maintained. When sheds are incomplete — coming off in patches or leaving retained skin on the tail tip, around the eyes, or along the body — the keeper needs shedding aids and a strategy to resolve the issue.

A humidity hide is the most effective preventive measure against problematic sheds. This is a hide box lined with damp sphagnum moss or moistened paper towels, placed on the warm side of the enclosure to create a localized microclimate of high humidity.
