Wallabies are powerful, fast-moving macropods that cover significant ground during their daily activity periods, and no aspect of their captive care is more consequential than the amount of physical space they are provided. A Bennett's wallaby in full stride can reach speeds exceeding thirty miles per hour, and even at a casual hop, these animals routinely traverse hundreds of yards in a single movement bout. Enclosures that restrict this natural locomotion produce stressed, physically deteriorating animals that develop stereotypic behaviors such as repetitive pacing, fence-line running, and excessive grooming. Providing adequate space is not a luxury but a baseline requirement for ethical wallaby keeping.
The minimum recommended enclosure area for a single adult wallaby is approximately fifty feet by fifty feet, yielding twenty-five hundred square feet of usable ground space. This figure represents a functional minimum, not an ideal, and experienced macropod keepers universally recommend larger enclosures whenever property and resources allow. For each additional wallaby housed in the same enclosure, a minimum of one thousand additional square feet should be added to prevent territorial stress and resource competition. Wallabies are social animals that benefit from companionship, but crowding negates the social advantages and replaces them with chronic stress-related health problems.
The shape of the enclosure matters nearly as much as its total area. Long, narrow runs are preferable to square or circular pens because they allow wallabies to build speed during hopping bouts, which is essential for cardiovascular health and muscle maintenance. An enclosure that is one hundred feet long and twenty-five feet wide provides the same square footage as a fifty-by-fifty pen but offers a far more functional movement corridor. Corners should be rounded or angled to prevent a fleeing wallaby from being trapped in a sharp corner where it could injure itself during a panic response, which is a common occurrence when animals are startled by dogs, loud noises, or unfamiliar people.
Vertical considerations are equally important even though wallabies are primarily terrestrial. Bennett's wallabies are capable of jumping over five feet from a standing position and considerably higher with a running start. Fence height must account for this ability with a generous safety margin, and the vertical clearance above any elevated feature within the enclosure, such as a raised platform or rock pile near the fence line, must be sufficient to prevent the animal from using it as a launch point. Enclosures situated on sloped terrain present additional challenges because the effective fence height on the uphill side is reduced by the grade of the slope.
