The Striped Skunk, Mephitis mephitis, is a true omnivore whose wild diet spans an extraordinarily broad range of food sources including insects, grubs, small rodents, bird eggs, amphibians, fruits, berries, roots, grasses, fungi, and human refuse when available. This dietary flexibility is one of the reasons the species thrives across such a wide geographic range, from southern Canada through the continental United States into northern Mexico. Replicating this nutritional breadth in captivity is the single most important factor in preventing the chronic health problems that plague pet skunks, particularly obesity, heart disease, metabolic bone disorder, and fatty liver syndrome.
Protein should constitute roughly thirty to forty percent of the total diet for an adult Striped Skunk, with the majority derived from lean animal sources rather than plant proteins alone. In the wild, invertebrates and small prey animals supply the bulk of this protein during spring and summer months, while fall diets shift toward higher fat and carbohydrate intake as the skunk prepares for winter torpor. Captive skunks that do not undergo seasonal torpor require consistent year-round protein levels without the dramatic caloric surges that wild skunks accumulate before denning season. Excess protein is less problematic than excess fat in this species, but chronically elevated protein beyond fifty percent of the diet can stress the kidneys over time.
Fat intake is the most critical macronutrient to monitor in captive Striped Skunks. Wild skunks naturally cycle through lean and heavy periods tied to seasonal food availability, but captive animals with constant access to calorie-dense foods will gain weight relentlessly. Obesity is the most common health problem in pet skunks by a wide margin, contributing to cardiovascular disease, joint degeneration, hepatic lipidosis, and a significantly shortened lifespan. Total dietary fat should remain between eight and twelve percent for adult skunks at a healthy body weight, dropping to the lower end of that range for sedentary or overweight individuals.
Vitamins and minerals require careful attention because commercial diets formulated specifically for skunks are uncommon and most keepers must assemble a diet from multiple sources. Calcium is of particular concern, as skunks that eat primarily muscle meat or commercial dog and cat foods without calcium supplementation are at severe risk of metabolic bone disease. Taurine, an amino acid essential for cardiac function that cats require in their diet, is also important for skunks and should be present either through whole prey items, organ meats, or direct supplementation. Fat-soluble vitamins A, D, and E must be balanced carefully because both deficiency and excess can cause serious pathology in a species that did not evolve to process concentrated vitamin supplements.
