While chinchillas do find raisins highly palatable, their concentrated sugar content makes them a genuinely poor dietary choice. A single raisin contains enough sugar to significantly impact the cecal environment of an animal this size. Supplements & Minerals

Timothy hay cubes and compressed hay blocks are sometimes categorized as supplements, though they are more accurately described as hay delivery alternatives. These products can be useful for travel situations, for reducing hay waste in messy feeders, or as enrichment items that the chinchilla must gnaw apart to consume. However, they should not fully replace loose, long-stem hay in the daily diet, because their compressed structure does not provide the same lateral chewing motion and molar abrasion that loose hay does. Compressed hay products are best used as a supplement to the primary loose hay supply rather than a substitute for it.

Foods to Avoid

Nuts and seeds are among the most commonly offered but most harmful food categories for captive chinchillas. Sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, peanuts, almonds, and similar items contain fat levels that are completely incompatible with chinchilla metabolism. Even a small handful of sunflower seeds delivers more fat than a chinchilla should consume in an entire week. Chronic seed and nut feeding is a leading dietary cause of hepatic lipidosis in pet chinchillas, and the damage accumulates silently for years before clinical symptoms emerge, at which point liver function may already be significantly compromised.

Plants from the nightshade family, including tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, and peppers, contain alkaloid compounds that are toxic to chinchillas and must never be offered. Avocado is toxic due to the presence of persin, a fungicidal compound that causes cardiac and respiratory distress in small mammals. Rhubarb leaves contain oxalic acid at concentrations that can cause kidney failure. Onions, garlic, and all members of the allium family are toxic and cause hemolytic anemia in chinchillas. Any plant material collected from outdoor environments should be treated with extreme caution, as wild plants may have been exposed to pesticides, herbicides, vehicle exhaust, or animal waste, and many common ornamental and garden plants are toxic to chinchillas even in small quantities.
