Glass aquariums are the most widely used enclosure type for Shaw's Jirds and offer several practical advantages. A standard forty-gallon breeder tank provides a footprint close to the minimum recommended dimensions and allows for deep substrate filling without bedding spilling through wire bars. Glass walls also provide unobstructed viewing, contain dust and substrate particles within the enclosure, and resist the powerful gnawing that would quickly compromise plastic or softwood enclosure components. Wire-topped tank setups combine the substrate-containment benefits of a glass base with improved airflow through a mesh lid. A substrate depth of eight to twelve inches is recommended for adult Shaw's Jirds, with deeper fills producing more complex and stable tunnel systems that the animals will maintain and modify over weeks or months. To achieve tunnel stability, the most effective approach is to layer different substrate materials rather than using a single type throughout. A base layer of compressed hay or shredded paper provides structural integrity that holds tunnel shapes, while a top layer of dust-free wood shavings such as aspen or kiln-dried pine adds absorbency and a naturalistic digging texture. Cedar shavings must never be used as substrate for Shaw's Jirds or any other small mammal. Introducing unfamiliar adult Shaw's Jirds to each other is considerably more challenging and riskier than it is with Mongolian gerbils, and the process requires patience, careful observation, and a structured protocol to minimize the potential for aggressive encounters. The split-cage method, in which the enclosure is divided by a mesh barrier that allows visual and olfactory contact without physical access, is the most widely recommended introduction technique. The barrier should remain in place for at least one to two weeks, during which time the jirds can be observed for signs of either curiosity and relaxed posturing near the divider, which suggest readiness for contact, or aggressive lunging, tooth chattering, and thumping, which indicate that more separation time is needed.

Enclosure size becomes even more critical in multi-animal setups because competition for resources and territory intensifies with each additional occupant. As a general guideline, add approximately ten gallons of tank volume or two hundred square inches of floor space per additional jird beyond the first pair. Multiple hides, food stations, and water sources should be provided so that subordinate animals are never forced to access critical resources through territory controlled by a dominant individual. A single food bowl or water bottle in a group enclosure creates a chokepoint that the dominant jird may guard, leading to stress, weight loss, and escalating aggression in lower-ranking animals.

Even in established groups, keepers must remain vigilant for signs of social breakdown, which can occur suddenly after months or even years of apparent harmony. Trigger events include the maturation of juvenile group members, the death or removal of an individual that served as a social buffer, hormonal shifts in intact animals, or environmental disruptions such as a full substrate change that eliminates scent boundaries. Warning signs of impending aggression include persistent chasing, bite wounds on the tail or rump, one animal consistently displaced from the sleeping area, and squealing vocalizations during previously peaceful interactions. At the first sign of drawn blood, the injured party must be separated immediately and housed independently until a reassessment of group composition can be made, as rodent bite wounds are prone to rapid infection and a targeted animal's stress response will continue to escalate as long as the aggressor has access.
