Rats are large-bodied, physically active, and profoundly social animals that must be kept in groups of at least two, which means cage size must accommodate multiple animals with room for exercise, exploration, separate sleeping areas, and food stations. The absolute minimum cage size recommended by experienced rat communities and exotic veterinary professionals for a pair of rats is approximately two and a half cubic feet of usable interior space, but larger is always better, and most dedicated keepers aim for cages that significantly exceed this baseline.

Vertical space is nearly as important as floor area for Rex Rats. Domesticated rats are skilled climbers that use all three dimensions of their enclosure when given the opportunity, and vertically oriented cages with multiple platforms allow keepers to provide adequate space without consuming excessive floor area in the room. A cage height of at least two feet is recommended, with solid shelving or platforms at staggered intervals to create distinct living zones for sleeping, eating, and active exploration. However, fall height must be managed carefully because rats are heavier than hamsters or mice and can sustain serious injuries from drops greater than about eighteen inches onto a hard surface.

Ventilation is a critical housing consideration that directly affects respiratory health, which is the single most common category of illness in domesticated rats. Temperature extremes are poorly tolerated by rats, and the ideal ambient temperature range is sixty-five to seventy-five degrees Fahrenheit. What to Look For

Bar spacing is the single most important structural specification when evaluating a wire cage for Rex Rats. The maximum recommended bar spacing for adult rats is one inch, and for juvenile rats under approximately four months of age, half-inch spacing is necessary to prevent escape. Rats are remarkably flexible animals capable of compressing their bodies through openings that appear far too small, and a determined rat can squeeze through bars spaced wider than one inch with alarming ease. Door size and placement affect daily cage management more than most buyers anticipate. A cage with only small doors makes it difficult to reach all areas for cleaning, to rearrange furnishings, and to retrieve rats that do not want to come out. Cage Types & Recommendations

Multi-level wire cages designed specifically for rats or ferrets represent the most practical and widely recommended housing option for Rex Rats. These cages feature powder-coated wire construction with horizontal bar orientation, multiple platforms connected by ramps, and large access doors for cleaning and interaction. The most popular models in the rat-keeping community offer roughly eight to twelve cubic feet of interior space, which comfortably houses a mischief of three to five rats with room for abundant furnishings and exercise. These cages typically retail at a moderate price point and are widely available through pet supply retailers and online vendors.

Single-level wire cages marketed for rabbits or guinea pigs are sometimes repurposed for rats, and while they offer excellent floor space and ventilation, they lack the vertical dimension that rats use so effectively. A rabbit cage can work as a temporary quarantine or recovery enclosure for a single rat, but it should not serve as permanent housing for a group because the limited height prevents the installation of climbing structures, elevated sleeping areas, and the multi-level enrichment that keeps rats mentally stimulated. If a single-level enclosure must be used long-term, it should be paired with substantial daily free-range time outside the cage to compensate for the restricted interior space.

Custom-built enclosures have become increasingly popular among dedicated rat keepers who want to maximize space and customize the layout. These range from modified wardrobes and bookcases converted into rat habitats to purpose-built wooden or acrylic enclosures with wire mesh ventilation panels. The advantages of custom builds include the ability to design around a specific room layout, incorporate built-in enrichment features, and achieve cage sizes that commercial products cannot match. The disadvantages include the significant time and skill investment required, the difficulty of ensuring adequate ventilation throughout a large enclosed space, and the challenge of waterproofing wooden surfaces against urine damage. Any custom enclosure must use rat-safe materials and avoid exposed edges, toxic finishes, or gaps that could allow escape.

Aquariums and solid-walled plastic enclosures are strongly discouraged for Rex Rat housing despite their occasional recommendation by uninformed pet store staff. Glass aquariums provide poor ventilation, trap ammonia and moisture at the substrate level, and create a stagnant microenvironment that dramatically accelerates respiratory disease. Plastic bin cages, sometimes called bin conversions, offer slightly better ventilation when modified with large mesh panels in the lid and sides, but they still fall short of the airflow provided by a full wire cage. Bin conversions may serve as acceptable temporary housing during cage cleaning or short-term quarantine situations, but they should not be considered a permanent housing solution for healthy Rex Rats.

Bedding & Substrate

Substrate selection directly impacts respiratory health, hygiene, comfort, and the keeper's workload, making it one of the most consequential decisions in Rex Rat husbandry after cage selection itself. The ideal bedding material absorbs moisture effectively, controls ammonia odor, produces minimal dust, does not contain volatile oils or chemical irritants, and is comfortable for the rat to walk, sleep, and dig in. No single product excels at every criterion, and most experienced keepers settle on a preferred substrate through trial and observation of how their particular rats respond to different options.

Kiln-dried pine shavings and aspen shavings are among the most widely available and affordable small-animal bedding options. Aspen is generally considered the safer choice of the two because it does not contain the phenol-based aromatic oils found in softwood species like pine and cedar. Kiln-drying reduces but may not entirely eliminate these volatile compounds from pine shavings, and the degree of reduction depends on the manufacturer's drying process, which is not always disclosed on the packaging. Cedar shavings must be avoided entirely, as they contain plicatic acid and other compounds that cause documented respiratory damage and liver enzyme elevation in laboratory rodents even at moderate exposure levels.

Paper-based bedding products have gained significant market share in recent years and offer excellent dust control and ammonia absorption. These products are manufactured from recycled paper pulp that is processed into pellets, crumbles, or fluffy shredded strips. Paper-based substrates are generally considered the safest option for rats with existing respiratory conditions because they produce virtually no airborne particulate when handled. The primary drawbacks are higher cost per volume compared to wood shavings and lower aesthetic appeal after soiling, as wet paper bedding tends to clump and discolor more visibly than wood-based alternatives.

Fleece liners represent an entirely different approach to cage substrate management. Reusable cage liners made from anti-pill fleece fabric are cut to fit each shelf and platform, secured in place with binder clips or Velcro strips, and washed every three to four days in a regular laundry cycle. Fleece wicks moisture through to an absorbent layer beneath, keeping the surface dry underfoot while directing urine into an underlying pad of towel fabric or puppy pad material. The advantages include zero dust exposure, no recurring substrate purchase costs after the initial investment, and a clean visual appearance. The disadvantages include the regular laundry commitment, the tendency of some rats to burrow under or chew through fleece liners, and the need for daily spot-cleaning of solid waste since fleece does not bury or absorb feces the way loose bedding does.

Cage Setup & Furnishings

A properly furnished cage transforms a wire enclosure into a functional habitat that supports the Rex Rat's behavioral needs for climbing, hiding, sleeping, foraging, and social interaction. Empty or sparsely furnished cages produce bored, stressed rats that may develop stereotypic behaviors such as bar chewing, excessive self-grooming, or aggression toward cage mates. The goal is to fill the cage with purposeful items that create distinct zones for different activities without making the interior so cluttered that the rats cannot move freely or the keeper cannot clean effectively.

Sleeping areas should include at least one enclosed hide per rat plus one additional hide to prevent resource guarding conflicts. Rats are thigmotactic animals that seek physical contact with surfaces on multiple sides of their body when resting, so dark, enclosed spaces with a single entrance are strongly preferred over open beds or exposed platforms. Commercially available options include plastic igloos, ceramic hideouts, wooden nest boxes, and fabric cube hides. Each material has trade-offs: plastic is durable and easy to sanitize but offers no insulation; ceramic retains cool temperatures in warm environments but is heavy and breakable; wood absorbs odors over time and must be replaced periodically; and fabric absorbs urine and requires frequent washing.

Platforms and shelves create the usable multi-level living space that makes vertical cages effective. Solid platforms are strongly preferred over wire mesh platforms, which can cause a painful foot condition called bumblefoot, or ulcerative pododermatitis, when rats stand on them for extended periods. Wire shelves that come standard with many cages should be covered with solid material, whether that means purchasing custom-cut plastic shelf covers, attaching sheets of corrugated plastic with cable ties, or draping the shelf with fleece. Ramps connecting platforms should also have solid surfaces and a gentle incline, as steep or slippery ramps can cause falls.

Litter training is achievable with most Rex Rats and significantly reduces the daily cleaning burden. Rats naturally tend to choose one or two corners of the cage for urination, and placing a small corner litter pan filled with a substrate different from the main cage bedding in those locations encourages consistent use. Paper pellet litter or compressed recycled paper products work well in litter pans. Clumping clay cat litter must never be used in a rat cage because ingestion of clumping clay during grooming can cause life-threatening intestinal blockages. Once litter training is established, the litter pan can be scooped or replaced daily while the rest of the cage bedding stays cleaner for a longer interval between full changes.

Cleaning & Maintenance

A consistent cleaning schedule is non-negotiable for Rex Rat health, with the frequency of each task determined by the number of rats housed, the cage size, the substrate type, and the ambient temperature and humidity of the room. Ammonia from urine decomposition is the primary air quality concern, and by the time a human nose can detect ammonia odor, the concentration is already high enough to irritate the delicate respiratory epithelium of a rat, which is positioned much closer to the cage floor where ammonia is most concentrated. The cleaning schedule should be calibrated so that ammonia never reaches perceptible levels between cleanings.

Daily maintenance tasks include removing uneaten fresh food before it spoils, spot-cleaning visibly soiled bedding or fleece, wiping down any surfaces with dried urine or fecal deposits, and refreshing the water supply. Litter pans should be scooped or emptied daily if the rats are litter trained. Water bottles should be checked for proper function and refilled with fresh water, as algae and bacterial biofilm develop inside bottles within days, particularly in warm environments. A quick daily inspection of the cage structure for loose bars, damaged latches, or chewed components prevents escape and injury.

Full cage cleaning should be performed every five to seven days for a cage housing two to three rats on loose bedding, or every three to four days for fleece-lined setups. A full cleaning involves removing all furnishings, discarding or laundering all substrate material, washing the base pan and all removable platforms and accessories with a pet-safe disinfectant, rinsing thoroughly to remove all chemical residue, and reassembling with fresh bedding. White vinegar diluted to a ten percent solution is an effective and rat-safe cleaning agent for routine washes, while a veterinary-grade enzymatic cleaner may be necessary for persistent urine staining or odor that vinegar alone cannot resolve.

Over-cleaning is a counterintuitive but real concern in rat husbandry. Rats rely on scent to navigate their environment, identify cage mates, and feel secure in their territory. Stripping every trace of scent from the cage during every cleaning session can cause stress, trigger territorial marking behavior that actually increases urine output, and in some cases provoke cage-mate aggression as rats fail to recognize each other in a completely scent-neutral environment. A practical compromise is to clean all hard surfaces thoroughly while leaving one or two fabric items, such as a hammock or a fleece sleeping pouch, unwashed during each cleaning cycle so that familiar scent markers persist. These items are then washed during the next cleaning when a different set of fabric items is left in place, rotating through the inventory so everything gets cleaned regularly without ever creating a completely scent-free cage.
