Raccoons (Procyon lotor) are among the most adaptable omnivores in the animal kingdom, a trait that makes feeding them in captivity both straightforward in principle and deceptively complex in practice. In the wild, their diet shifts dramatically with the seasons, incorporating crayfish, frogs, insects, bird eggs, fruits, nuts, grains, and scavenged human refuse depending on geographic location and time of year. This seasonal dietary fluidity means that a captive raccoon's nutritional plan should not remain static throughout the year but should instead rotate protein sources, adjust caloric density, and vary produce offerings to approximate the natural feeding rhythm their metabolism has evolved to expect.
Protein is the cornerstone of raccoon nutrition, and requirements are substantially higher than those of herbivorous small mammals. Adult raccoons in maintenance condition typically require a diet consisting of roughly twenty-five to thirty-five percent protein by dry weight, with juveniles, pregnant females, and nursing mothers needing protein levels at the upper end of that range or slightly above. Animal-based proteins from poultry, fish, eggs, and insects deliver amino acid profiles that are far more biologically appropriate for raccoons than plant-based protein concentrates, though a combination of both sources produces the most balanced results.
Fat content must be managed carefully across seasons. Raccoons in temperate climates naturally accumulate significant fat reserves in autumn to prepare for winter dormancy periods when food intake drops substantially. Captive raccoons that are kept in climate-controlled environments and remain active year-round do not need the same autumn caloric surplus and are highly susceptible to obesity when fat intake is not moderated. A dietary fat content of eight to twelve percent is appropriate for most of the year, with slight increases permitted during cooler months if the animal is housed in an environment that experiences natural temperature fluctuations.
Micronutrient requirements for captive raccoons include adequate calcium, phosphorus, taurine, and fat-soluble vitamins. The calcium-to-phosphorus ratio should approximate 1.5 to 1 or 2 to 1, which can be challenging to achieve without supplementation when the diet relies heavily on muscle meat and insects, both of which tend to be phosphorus-heavy. Taurine deficiency, while more commonly discussed in the context of feline nutrition, has been documented in raccoons fed diets lacking sufficient animal tissue, and can lead to cardiomyopathy and retinal degeneration over time.
