Grapes and raisins are increasingly recognized as potentially nephrotoxic to a range of mammalian species, and while the specific mechanism of toxicity is not fully characterized in procyonids, the documented kidney damage in dogs and the physiological similarities between canid and procyonid renal function make avoidance the only responsible approach. The unpredictability of grape toxicity, where some individual animals appear to tolerate them while others develop acute kidney failure from small quantities, makes it impossible to establish a safe dose, and no nutritional benefit from grapes justifies the risk when so many other fruits are safely available.

Avocado flesh, pits, skin, and leaves contain persin, a fungicidal toxin that causes vomiting, diarrhea, and myocardial damage in a number of mammalian species. While raccoons in some geographic areas do encounter and consume avocado in the wild, the cultivated Hass avocado varieties commonly found in households tend to have higher persin concentrations than wild avocado species, and the risk of cardiac complications makes avocado an unacceptable food item for captive raccoons regardless of anecdotal reports of wild consumption.

Processed human foods represent perhaps the most insidious dietary threat to captive raccoons, not because any single exposure is acutely toxic but because regular access to salty, sugary, and fatty processed foods produces chronic metabolic damage that compounds over the animal's lifetime. Chips, cookies, candy, fast food, processed meats like hot dogs and deli slices, and sweetened cereals are all items that a raccoon will eagerly consume and may actively seek out, but their sodium levels, refined sugar content, and chemical preservative loads are fundamentally incompatible with raccoon metabolic health. The raccoon's intelligence and food-driven motivation make it especially important to establish firm boundaries around processed food access, because a raccoon that learns it can obtain these items through persistence or theft will dedicate extraordinary effort to doing so.

Caffeine-containing beverages and foods, including coffee, tea, energy drinks, and caffeinated supplements, should never be accessible to a captive raccoon. Caffeine is a methylxanthine compound closely related to theobromine, and raccoons exhibit similar sensitivity to its cardiovascular and neurological effects. Even small amounts of spilled coffee or discarded tea bags can deliver a pharmacologically significant dose to an animal of this size, making household management of caffeine-containing products an important aspect of raccoon-safe food practices.
