Prairie dogs are herbivores whose wild diet consists almost entirely of grasses, forbs, roots, and the occasional seed head. Their digestive systems are built for high-fiber, low-fat plant matter, and replicating this balance in captivity is the single most important factor in long-term health. A diet too rich in fats, sugars, or simple starches can quickly lead to obesity, liver disease, and heart problems — conditions that are distressingly common in captive prairie dogs fed inappropriate foods.
Fiber is the cornerstone of prairie dog nutrition. Grass hay should make up the bulk of daily intake, providing the long-strand roughage that keeps the gut moving and wears down continuously growing teeth. Without adequate fiber, prairie dogs are prone to gastrointestinal stasis and dental malocclusion, both of which can become life-threatening if left unchecked.
Protein requirements are modest compared to omnivorous rodents. Prairie dogs do best on a diet that delivers roughly 14–16 percent crude protein and no more than 2–4 percent fat. Excess protein taxes the kidneys over time, while excess fat contributes to the obesity that plagues so many captive individuals. Calcium-to-phosphorus ratios also matter; an imbalance can contribute to metabolic bone disease, particularly in younger animals still developing their skeletal structure.
Vitamins and minerals round out the nutritional picture. Prairie dogs synthesize some vitamin D through UVB exposure, but dietary sources provide an important supplement, especially for indoor-housed animals. Vitamin C is not a dietary requirement for prairie dogs the way it is for guinea pigs, but a varied selection of fresh greens naturally provides a range of micronutrients that support immune function and overall vitality.
