The Persian Desert Jird, Meriones persicus, is a granivorous rodent native to the arid and semi-arid landscapes stretching from Iran through Afghanistan and into parts of Pakistan and Turkmenistan. In the wild, these jirds subsist primarily on seeds, grains, roots, and dried vegetation, with opportunistic consumption of insects and other invertebrates when seasonally available. Their digestive systems are highly adapted to extracting maximum nutrition from low-moisture, calorie-dense plant matter, which means captive feeding strategies must prioritize seed-based diets supplemented with measured amounts of fresh produce and occasional animal protein rather than the fruit-heavy approaches appropriate for tropical omnivores.
Protein requirements for Persian Desert Jirds are moderate compared to insectivorous small mammals, generally falling between fourteen and eighteen percent of the total diet by dry weight. The bulk of this protein is naturally derived from seeds and grains, with supplemental insect protein providing essential amino acids that plant sources alone may lack in sufficient concentration. Fat content in the diet should be carefully managed and kept between five and seven percent. Although jirds in the wild may consume higher-fat seeds when preparing for seasonal scarcity, captive animals that receive consistent food access are prone to obesity and hepatic lipidosis when fat intake is chronically elevated.
Fiber plays an important supporting role in digestive health, and the coarse hulls and fibrous structures of whole grains and hay contribute to both gut motility and dental wear. Persian Desert Jirds have continuously growing incisors that require regular abrasion, and hard, fibrous foods serve a dual nutritional and dental function that pellet-only diets cannot replicate. A diet that includes a mix of whole seeds, dried grasses, and occasional hay provides the textural variety needed to keep the teeth in proper condition.
Water metabolism in this species is remarkably efficient, a trait shared across the Meriones genus. Persian Desert Jirds produce highly concentrated urine and extract significant moisture from their food, meaning their free water intake is lower than that of many similarly sized rodents. However, this adaptation does not eliminate the need for constant access to fresh drinking water in captivity. Metabolic water production supplements but does not replace direct hydration, and dehydration in captive jirds can progress rapidly if water bottles malfunction or are not checked daily.
