Treats & Supplements

Treats are a critical tool for building and maintaining the bond between a keeper and a honey bear, particularly during the extended taming process that kinkajous typically require. The most effective treats are items with high palatability that the animal does not receive as part of its regular diet, creating a clear behavioral association between human interaction and a desirable food reward. A small dab of raw honey offered from a spoon or fingertip is the classic kinkajou treat, directly leveraging the species' evolved affinity for this food source. Commercial treats marketed for small mammals, primates, or parrots should be evaluated with extreme skepticism. Foods to Avoid

Chocolate in all forms is toxic to honey bears and must be kept completely out of reach at all times. Theobromine and caffeine, the two methylxanthine compounds responsible for chocolate toxicity in many mammalian species, are poorly metabolized by kinkajous and can cause cardiac arrhythmias, seizures, and death even in quantities that might seem trivially small relative to the animal's body weight. Dark chocolate and baking chocolate contain the highest concentrations of theobromine, but milk chocolate and white chocolate products also present risk and should never be dismissed as safe. Given that honey bears are agile, curious, and capable of opening containers and cabinets, any household with a free-roaming kinkajou must store chocolate products in secured locations the animal cannot access.

All members of the allium family represent a serious toxicity risk and must be excluded from the diet without exception. Onions, garlic, leeks, chives, and shallots contain organosulfur compounds that damage red blood cells and cause hemolytic anemia in kinkajous. The toxic effect is cumulative and dose-dependent, meaning that even small repeated exposures over time can produce clinically significant anemia before obvious symptoms appear. Cooked alliums are equally dangerous, as the responsible compounds are not destroyed by heat. Keepers who share meal preparation spaces between human and animal food must be vigilant about cross-contamination.

Avocado should be strictly avoided due to the presence of persin, a fungicidal toxin concentrated in the skin, pit, and leaves but also present in the flesh to varying degrees depending on the variety. The Guatemalan varieties of avocado contain the highest persin levels and are the most dangerous, but since the average consumer cannot reliably distinguish avocado cultivars at the point of purchase, the safest practice is to treat all avocado as potentially toxic. Clinical signs of persin toxicity in small mammals include respiratory distress, myocardial damage, and fluid accumulation around the heart and lungs.

Processed human foods, dairy products, and caffeinated beverages represent an entire category of inappropriate offerings that some well-meaning but uninformed owners introduce into the kinkajou diet. Bread, pasta, crackers, chips, cereal, and other grain-based processed foods are nutritionally empty for a frugivore and contribute to obesity and digestive dysfunction. Dairy products including milk, cheese, and ice cream are problematic because adult kinkajous, like most non-ruminant mammals, have limited lactase production and cannot efficiently digest lactose, leading to diarrhea and cramping. Coffee, tea, soda, and energy drinks all contain caffeine and should never be offered, regardless of the animal's apparent interest in them.

Citrus fruits occupy a gray area in kinkajou nutrition and are best avoided or offered only in very small, infrequent quantities.
