Honey bears, known scientifically as Potos flavus, are members of the family Procyonidae and occupy a nearly unique dietary niche among procyonids as specialized frugivores. In the wild, an estimated ninety percent or more of their caloric intake comes from ripe fruit and flower nectar, with the remainder split between insects, small vertebrates, and the occasional egg. This extreme reliance on fruit and sugar-rich nectar has shaped their physiology in ways that directly influence how they must be fed in captivity. Their elongated tongue, designed for extracting nectar and honey from deep floral structures, and their relatively simple gastrointestinal tract both reflect a digestive system optimized for processing soft, high-moisture, sugar-dense foods rather than fibrous vegetation or heavy protein loads.
The primary macronutrient concern for captive honey bears is managing sugar intake while still honoring their frugivorous biology. Wild kinkajous expend enormous energy traveling through the canopy each night to locate fruiting trees, burning off the sugars they consume through sustained arboreal locomotion. Captive animals, even in generously sized enclosures, cannot match this activity level, making them highly susceptible to obesity, insulin resistance, and dental disease when fed the same proportion of high-sugar fruits they would consume in nature. A captive feeding plan must therefore emphasize lower-sugar fruits and include structured portions rather than allowing ad libitum fruit access.
Protein requirements are modest compared to omnivorous or insectivorous exotic mammals, generally falling between five and ten percent of the total diet by dry weight. Excessive protein intake can strain the kidneys over the animal's long lifespan and has been associated with renal issues in aging kinkajous. However, some animal protein is necessary, particularly for growing juveniles and breeding females, and should be supplied through small amounts of cooked egg, commercially bred insects, or a formulated primate biscuit designed for frugivorous species.
Vitamin and mineral balance deserves careful attention because fruit-heavy diets tend to be low in calcium and vitamin D3 while being disproportionately high in phosphorus and potassium. Wild kinkajous likely compensate through incidental insect consumption and exposure to trace minerals in bark and soil. In captivity, without deliberate supplementation and careful food selection, metabolic bone disease is one of the most common and devastating nutritional disorders seen in honey bears, particularly in animals under two years of age whose skeletal systems are still developing.
