Space Requirements

Gerbils are active, burrowing animals that need substantially more space than their small size might suggest. The widely cited minimum for a pair of gerbils is a floor area of roughly twenty gallons in aquarium terms, but experienced keepers generally recommend going larger whenever possible. A forty-gallon breeder tank or equivalent enclosure gives a pair of gerbils enough room to establish separate sleeping and activity zones, which reduces stress and territorial friction.

Floor space matters far more than height for gerbils. Unlike hamsters, which benefit from climbing opportunities, gerbils are ground-oriented diggers whose primary enrichment comes from burrowing through deep substrate. An enclosure with a large footprint and moderate height—enough to accommodate six to ten inches of bedding plus a mesh topper—serves gerbils far better than a tall, narrow cage with limited floor area.

Each additional gerbil beyond a pair requires roughly five gallons of additional space, though this is a rough guideline. Overcrowding is one of the leading causes of aggression in gerbil groups, and the consequences can be severe—gerbil fights can result in serious injury or death. When in doubt, err on the side of more space rather than less, and always have a spare enclosure available in case a group needs to be separated.

Placement of the enclosure within your home also matters. Gerbils are sensitive to vibrations and sudden noise, so avoid locations near speakers, washing machines, or heavy foot traffic. A room with a stable temperature between sixty-five and seventy-five degrees Fahrenheit, away from direct sunlight and drafts, is ideal.

Enclosure Types

Glass aquariums with mesh toppers are the most popular housing option for gerbils, and for good reason. Glass walls contain substrate effectively, allowing owners to provide the deep bedding layer that gerbils need for burrowing. There is no risk of bar chewing—a compulsive behavior that frequently develops in wire-cage-housed gerbils—and visibility is excellent from all angles. The primary drawback is ventilation; a well-fitted mesh lid is essential to ensure adequate airflow while preventing escapes.

Wire cages designed for hamsters or rats are generally poor choices for gerbils. The bar spacing on many models is wide enough for a determined gerbil to squeeze through, and even appropriately spaced bars invite persistent chewing that can damage teeth and cause chronic stress. Wire floors and platforms are also hazardous—gerbil feet and tails can become caught between bars, leading to injuries ranging from minor abrasions to fractures and tail degloving.

Modular plastic habitats with tubes and chambers are visually appealing but come with significant practical problems. Ventilation inside plastic tubes is poor, leading to ammonia buildup from urine. The tubes are difficult to clean thoroughly and can trap a gerbil if it gets stuck or if a connection comes loose. These systems also provide almost no room for deep substrate, which eliminates the primary enrichment activity for captive gerbils.

DIY enclosures built from large storage bins or converted furniture pieces are an option for handy owners. The key requirements are chew-proof materials (gerbils will gnaw through plastic in short order), adequate ventilation, secure closures, and enough depth for a generous substrate layer. Hardware cloth or welded wire mesh can be used for ventilated panels, but ensure all cut edges are filed smooth and that mesh openings are no larger than half an inch.

Substrate & Bedding

Substrate choice is arguably the most important housing decision for gerbils, because burrowing is their dominant natural behavior. The ideal substrate holds tunnels without collapsing, is safe if ingested in small amounts, controls odor reasonably well, and is free of dust and aromatic oils. A blend of paper-based bedding and timothy hay, packed firmly in the lower layers and left loose on top, creates a stable burrowing medium that most gerbils take to immediately.

Paper-based bedding products made from unbleached, unscented recycled paper are the current standard recommendation among experienced keepers and exotic veterinarians. They are low-dust, absorbent, and hold tunnel structure when compressed. Depth is critical—aim for a minimum of six inches in the deepest section of the enclosure, and eight to ten inches is better. Gerbils that cannot burrow to a satisfying depth often develop repetitive stereotypic behaviors such as excessive digging in corners or persistent gnawing on enclosure walls.

Aspen shavings are a safe wood-based alternative and can be mixed with paper bedding to add structural stability to tunnels. Avoid cedar and pine shavings entirely; these softwoods contain phenolic compounds that cause respiratory irritation and liver damage in small mammals. Kiln-dried pine marketed as pet-safe has reduced phenol levels but still carries enough risk that most veterinarians advise against it.

Sand is not a primary substrate for gerbils but plays an important supporting role. A shallow dish of chinchilla-grade sand—not dust—placed in the enclosure allows gerbils to take sand baths, which help maintain coat condition and reduce greasiness. The sand bath should be offered for a few hours at a time rather than left in permanently, as gerbils may use it as a latrine if given constant access.

Nesting & Sleeping Areas

Gerbils construct elaborate nests and will spend considerable time arranging nesting material to their satisfaction. Providing appropriate nesting supplies is both a welfare requirement and a source of significant enrichment. Plain, unscented toilet paper and paper towels are the simplest and safest nesting materials—gerbils shred them into fine strips and weave them into insulated, structured nests. Avoid cotton wool, fabric strips, and so-called fluffy bedding products; fibers from these materials can wrap around toes and limbs, cutting off circulation and causing tissue death.

A dedicated hide or nest box gives gerbils a sense of security and a dark, enclosed space for sleeping. Ceramic hides are durable and chew-resistant, maintain a cool interior temperature, and are easy to clean. Wooden hides are also acceptable and serve double duty as gnawing surfaces, though they will eventually be destroyed and need replacement. Plastic hides are best avoided because gerbils chew them into sharp fragments that pose ingestion hazards.

Gerbils kept in pairs or groups almost always sleep in a communal pile, so the nest box should be large enough to accommodate all residents comfortably. A box with a single entrance roughly two inches in diameter is sufficient; multiple entrances can make the space feel less secure. Position the nest box at substrate level or partially buried so gerbils can incorporate it into their tunnel network.

Hay serves triple duty as food, nesting material, and tunnel reinforcement. Timothy hay or orchard grass placed throughout the substrate gives gerbils natural fibers to weave into their constructions and provides structural support for tunnels, reducing collapse risk. Replace soiled hay during routine spot cleaning but leave the main nest undisturbed unless it is visibly dirty or damp.

Climate & Environment

Gerbils originate from the steppes and semi-arid regions of Mongolia and northern China, where temperatures can swing dramatically between day and night and between seasons. In captivity, they tolerate a comfortable range of roughly sixty-five to seventy-five degrees Fahrenheit. Sustained temperatures above eighty degrees can cause heat stress, and temperatures below sixty degrees can induce torpor—a state of reduced metabolic activity that is stressful and potentially dangerous in a captive setting.

Humidity is a less obvious but equally important environmental factor. Gerbils are adapted to dry conditions and do poorly in persistently humid environments. High humidity accelerates ammonia production from urine-soaked substrate, promotes mold growth in stored food hoards, and can contribute to respiratory infections. If you live in a humid climate, ensure the enclosure has ample ventilation through a mesh top and consider running a dehumidifier in the room during wet seasons.

Lighting should follow a natural day-night cycle. Gerbils are crepuscular—most active at dawn and dusk—and benefit from predictable light patterns. Position the enclosure where it receives ambient room light during the day but is not struck by direct sunlight, which can overheat a glass tank rapidly. Supplemental lighting is unnecessary, but if the room is windowless, a lamp on a timer that provides ten to twelve hours of light per day helps maintain a healthy circadian rhythm.

Noise and vibration deserve attention. Gerbils have acute hearing and are easily stressed by sudden loud sounds, persistent low-frequency vibrations, and ultrasonic frequencies emitted by some electronic devices. Keep the enclosure away from televisions, sound systems, and appliances that generate vibration. A quiet room with moderate, predictable household activity is ideal.

Multi-Gerbil Households

Gerbils are obligately social and should never be kept alone. A solitary gerbil will become stressed, lethargic, and prone to stereotypic behaviors regardless of how enriched its environment is. The most stable social unit is a pair—either two males or two females from the same litter, introduced at a young age. Trios and larger groups can work but carry a higher risk of social instability and eventual fighting, especially as the animals mature.

Introducing unfamiliar gerbils requires a structured process known as split-cage introduction. The enclosure is divided by a mesh partition so the gerbils can see, smell, and interact through the barrier without physical contact. The gerbils are swapped to opposite sides of the partition daily so each becomes accustomed to the other's scent. This process typically takes one to two weeks, and the partition should not be removed until the gerbils are consistently sleeping against it and showing no signs of aggression through the mesh.

Even well-bonded gerbil pairs can experience sudden, violent falling-outs known as declanning. The triggers are not always obvious—illness, environmental stress, scent changes, or simply maturation can destabilize a previously peaceful pair. Warning signs include persistent chasing, loud squeaking, boxing posture, and one gerbil being excluded from the nest. If declanning occurs, separate the gerbils immediately; once a bond breaks, it rarely reforms, and the animals will need to be housed separately or re-paired through the full introduction process with a new partner.

For multi-gerbil households, having a fully equipped spare enclosure on hand at all times is not optional—it is a necessity. Declanning can happen overnight, and a gerbil that is being attacked needs to be removed immediately. The spare enclosure should be ready to use with substrate, food, water, and a hide so the separated gerbil can settle in without delay.
