Animal fats provide concentrated energy that supports the genet's high metabolic rate and nocturnal activity patterns, and they serve as carriers for fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K that are critical for immune function, calcium metabolism, and reproductive health. Diets deficient in animal fat often produce genets with dull, brittle fur and chronically low energy levels, while excessive fat intake without corresponding activity leads to obesity and hepatic lipidosis.
Vitamin and mineral balance in a captive genet's diet demands careful attention to calcium-to-phosphorus ratios, which should approximate one-point-two to one or slightly higher. Whole prey items naturally deliver appropriate mineral ratios because bones are consumed along with soft tissue, but diets based on boneless meat or muscle-meat-only feeding create severe calcium deficiency over time.
