Fat-Tailed Gerbils are ground-dwelling, burrowing rodents native to the sandy deserts and semi-arid scrublands of North Africa, and their enclosure must reflect these biological imperatives. Unlike Mongolian gerbils, which are vigorous chewers capable of destroying plastic bin cages in hours, Fat-Tailed Gerbils are comparatively gentle on enclosure materials. However, the primary enclosure consideration is not chew resistance but rather the ability to hold a deep substrate layer, maintain low ambient humidity, and provide adequate floor space for a species that moves horizontally rather than climbing vertically.
A glass aquarium-style tank is the most widely recommended enclosure type for Fat-Tailed Gerbils, with a minimum footprint of twenty gallons for a single animal or a pair. Tanks measuring thirty by twelve inches at the base provide sufficient floor area for foraging, burrowing, and territorial movement without the height-related risks that tall enclosures pose for a species that does not climb well. Glass tanks excel at containing deep substrate layers without leakage, maintain stable internal temperatures when paired with appropriate heating elements, and allow clear observation of the animal's behavior without the visual obstruction that wire mesh introduces.
Wire-topped cages and modular plastic habitats designed for hamsters or Mongolian gerbils are generally poor choices for Fat-Tailed Gerbils. Wire cages cannot contain the four to six inches of substrate this species needs for burrowing, and the open airflow through wire walls makes it difficult to maintain the warm, dry microclimate the animal requires. Plastic modular systems with tubes and interconnected chambers obstruct airflow in the opposite direction, trapping moisture and creating humidity levels that predispose the gerbil to respiratory infections and fungal skin conditions. These systems also make cleaning cumbersome and provide limited usable floor space once the tube attachment points are accounted for.
Ventilation is a critical design consideration even though the enclosure must remain warm and dry. A fine-mesh screen lid is essential for glass tanks, providing airflow without allowing escape and preventing the buildup of ammonia from urine-soaked substrate. Solid glass or acrylic lids should never be used, as they trap moisture and create a humid microenvironment that contradicts the species' desert physiology. The mesh should be secure enough to prevent the gerbil from pushing it open during exploration, as Fat-Tailed Gerbils, while not skilled climbers, are capable of reaching the top of enclosure furniture and testing the lid's boundaries.
