Ventilation is a critical housing consideration that directly impacts respiratory health, one of the most significant welfare concerns in captive mice. Mice produce ammonia through their urine at rates that can quickly create hazardous air quality within a poorly ventilated enclosure. Chronic exposure to elevated ammonia levels damages the delicate mucosal lining of the respiratory tract, predisposing mice to bacterial infections, chronic rhinitis, and mycoplasmosis flare-ups. Temperatures above eighty degrees can cause heat stress, which mice are particularly vulnerable to because they cannot sweat and have limited panting ability. Enclosure placement within the home should avoid direct sunlight, heating vents, air conditioning drafts, and exterior walls that transmit seasonal temperature fluctuations.
Noise and vibration sensitivity also factor into housing decisions. Mice have acute hearing that extends well into the ultrasonic range, and they are disturbed by household noises that humans may not consider problematic, including television audio, vacuum cleaners, barking dogs, and even ultrasonic pest deterrent devices that some households use. The enclosure should be situated in a room that offers relative quiet during the daytime hours when mice are resting, with activity and interaction concentrated in the evening and nighttime hours that align with their natural crepuscular and nocturnal rhythms.
