Dwarf Campbell Russian Hamsters are considerably smaller than Syrian hamsters, but their space requirements are not proportionally reduced. Phodopus campbelli is a highly active species that covers substantial distances during its nightly activity periods, and research on wild populations in the Mongolian steppe has documented individual home ranges spanning several hundred square meters. While captive conditions obviously cannot replicate the open grasslands these animals evolved to traverse, the enclosure must provide enough unbroken floor space to support running, burrowing, foraging, and territorial behavior without chronic stress from spatial confinement.
The widely cited minimum floor space recommendation for dwarf hamsters is four hundred fifty square inches of uninterrupted floor area, which translates to roughly thirty inches by fifteen inches or a similar configuration yielding equivalent square footage. However, welfare-focused organizations and experienced breeders increasingly advocate for six hundred square inches or more, particularly for Campbell dwarfs that will be housed singly and cannot distribute their social and behavioral energy across interactions with cagemates. Larger enclosures consistently correlate with reduced stereotypic behaviors such as bar chewing, repetitive corner pacing, and excessive wheel running, all of which are indicators of psychological distress in captive rodents.
Height is a secondary consideration to floor space but still matters for two reasons. First, the enclosure must accommodate a deep bedding layer of at least six inches, preferably eight to ten, to allow natural burrowing behavior. Second, a running wheel appropriate for a dwarf hamster requires clearance of at least eight inches above the bedding surface. When these two requirements are combined with the need for a secure lid that prevents escape, the total interior height of the enclosure should be at least fifteen to eighteen inches. Tall, narrow enclosures that sacrifice floor area for vertical space are inappropriate for hamsters, which are ground-dwelling animals that rarely climb voluntarily and can injure themselves falling from elevated platforms.
Temperature and humidity stability within the enclosure are influenced by its placement in the home. Campbell dwarfs are adapted to a continental climate with cold winters and warm summers, and they tolerate a comfortable temperature range of sixty-five to seventy-five degrees Fahrenheit in captivity. Enclosures should never be placed in direct sunlight, near heating vents, adjacent to exterior walls with poor insulation, or in rooms subject to drafts. Glass and plastic enclosures retain heat more effectively than wire cages and can overheat in warm rooms, so placement in a climate-controlled interior space is essential for these materials.
