In the wild, a Duprasi's daily activity budget is divided between burrow maintenance, foraging across sandy terrain, investigating novel scent trails left by passing invertebrates, and brief bouts of territorial patrolling during the crepuscular transition hours. Captive housing that offers only food, water, and substrate without structured enrichment leaves large portions of this behavioral repertoire unaddressed, leading over time to the flat, disengaged demeanor that keepers sometimes mistake for the species' natural temperament rather than recognizing it as a symptom of environmental under-stimulation.
The enrichment strategy for Duprasi should target three behavioral domains. The first is locomotion and exercise, which in the wild is accomplished through extended surface foraging bouts that may cover significant distances relative to the animal's body size. The second is exploration and investigation, driven by the species' naturally curious disposition and its reliance on olfactory and tactile information to map its environment. The third is manipulation and problem-solving, which in wild Duprasi manifests as the excavation and structural maintenance of complex burrow systems with multiple chambers and emergency exits.
Enrichment should be rotated regularly to maintain novelty, which is the primary driver of investigative behavior in this species. A Duprasi that has fully explored every object in its enclosure and mapped every scent will eventually reduce its activity levels and spend increasing amounts of time sleeping, not because it is content but because its environment has become predictable and therefore unstimulating. Introducing a new object, rearranging existing furnishings, or presenting food in a novel format every few days sustains the curiosity-driven exploration behavior that keeps the animal mentally and physically engaged.
It is important to calibrate enrichment intensity to the species' temperament. Duprasi are not high-energy athletes like Syrian hamsters or Mongolian gerbils, and their enrichment program should reflect a pace that aligns with their calm, methodical approach to environmental interaction. Overwhelming the enclosure with stimuli or introducing large, unfamiliar objects without a gradual acclimation period can trigger anxiety responses including freezing, defensive posturing, and retreat to the burrow for extended periods.
