Domestic skunks are true omnivores with dietary requirements that differ significantly from those of most commonly kept small mammals. In the wild, striped skunks consume an extraordinarily varied diet that shifts with the seasons, ranging from insects, grubs, and earthworms in warmer months to small rodents, eggs, fruits, roots, and carrion during leaner periods. This evolutionary flexibility means the domestic skunk's digestive system is designed to process both animal and plant matter efficiently, but it also means that captive diets must intentionally replicate that diversity rather than relying on a single commercial product to deliver complete nutrition.
Protein should constitute roughly thirty to forty percent of the domestic skunk's total diet, with an emphasis on lean, whole-food protein sources rather than processed or rendered proteins. Unlike ferrets, which are obligate carnivores requiring extremely high protein and fat, skunks need a more moderate protein level balanced against a meaningful proportion of vegetables, fruits, and complex carbohydrates. Fat content should be kept between eight and twelve percent for adult skunks at maintenance weight, as these animals are highly prone to obesity in captivity due to reduced activity levels compared to their free-ranging counterparts.
Vegetable matter should form approximately thirty to forty percent of the daily diet by volume. Skunks require a broad array of vitamins and minerals that are most reliably supplied through fresh produce, including dark leafy greens, cruciferous vegetables, squash, and root vegetables. The fiber in these foods supports healthy gut motility, which is important because skunks are susceptible to both constipation and intestinal blockages when fed diets too low in roughage or too high in processed kibble.
Calcium metabolism is a central concern in domestic skunk nutrition. Skunks that do not receive adequate dietary calcium, particularly during their rapid growth phase in the first year of life, are at serious risk of developing metabolic bone disease. This condition leads to weakened, porous bones that fracture under normal activity, dental abnormalities, and in severe cases, seizures caused by dangerously low blood calcium levels. Maintaining a calcium-to-phosphorus ratio of approximately two to one across the total diet is considered the baseline target by veterinarians experienced with this species.
