Coatimundis are members of the family Procyonidae and are classified as omnivores with a pronounced leaning toward invertebrate prey, fruit, and small vertebrates in the wild. Their natural range across Central and South America exposes them to an extraordinarily diverse menu that shifts with seasonal fruit availability and insect abundance. Replicating even a fraction of this variety in captivity demands careful planning, because coatimundis that receive monotonous or nutritionally incomplete diets develop problems ranging from obesity and chronic gastrointestinal disturbance to severe metabolic bone disease and organ failure.
Protein requirements for coatimundis are substantial compared to most rodent-sized exotic pets, reflecting both their body mass and their active, exploratory lifestyle. Adult coatimundis generally thrive when protein constitutes roughly twenty-five to thirty-five percent of the total diet by dry weight, with the majority of that protein coming from animal-based sources such as insects, cooked eggs, and limited amounts of lean cooked poultry. Plant-based proteins from legumes and nuts contribute useful amino acids but should not serve as the primary protein source, because the amino acid profiles of plant proteins do not fully satisfy the requirements of a species that evolved to catch and consume live prey daily.
Fat intake must be managed carefully despite the coatimundi's high activity level. Wild coatimundis expend enormous energy foraging, climbing, and digging, which offsets fat consumption from grubs, larvae, and fruit pulp. Captive animals, even those with generous enclosures, rarely achieve equivalent caloric expenditure, making them vulnerable to weight gain when fat-dense foods such as nuts, avocado, or fatty meats appear too frequently in the diet. A total dietary fat content of roughly eight to twelve percent by dry weight is a reasonable target for most adult coatimundis that are not breeding or nursing.
Vitamins and minerals deserve special attention because deficiencies develop insidiously and may not produce obvious clinical signs until significant damage has already occurred. Calcium and phosphorus balance is the single most consequential mineral concern. Coatimundis fed primarily on muscle meat, unsupplemented insects, or fruit-heavy diets without calcium fortification are at extreme risk for metabolic bone disease, which causes progressive skeletal weakening, pathological fractures, and dental deterioration. Vitamin D3 is equally important, as it governs calcium absorption in the gut, and captive coatimundis that lack access to unfiltered sunlight may require dietary supplementation to maintain adequate D3 levels.
