Protein requirements for coatimundis are substantial compared to most rodent-sized exotic pets, reflecting both their body mass and their active, exploratory lifestyle. Adult coatimundis generally thrive when protein constitutes roughly twenty-five to thirty-five percent of the total diet by dry weight, with the majority of that protein coming from animal-based sources such as insects, cooked eggs, and limited amounts of lean cooked poultry. Plant-based proteins from legumes and nuts contribute useful amino acids but should not serve as the primary protein source, because the amino acid profiles of plant proteins do not fully satisfy the requirements of a species that evolved to catch and consume live prey daily.

Fat intake must be managed carefully despite the coatimundi's high activity level. Wild coatimundis expend enormous energy foraging, climbing, and digging, which offsets fat consumption from grubs, larvae, and fruit pulp. Insects purchased from pet supply chains should come from suppliers that gut-load their stock on nutritious substrates and that can certify their insects are free of pesticide contamination. Labeling claims on exotic pet food products should be viewed with healthy skepticism. Terms like natural, premium, and veterinarian recommended carry no regulated meaning in most jurisdictions and do not guarantee that a product is appropriate for coatimundis. Instead of relying on front-of-package marketing, examine the guaranteed analysis panel for protein, fat, fiber, and moisture percentages, and compare the ingredient list against established nutritional guidelines for procyonids. Products that bury their protein sources below grains, starches, or unnamed meals on the ingredient list are unlikely to deliver adequate nutrition for this species.

Recommended Dry Food

Products manufactured by companies that supply accredited zoos are formulated based on decades of nutritional research across procyonid species and typically deliver protein in the twenty-eight to thirty-five percent range with moderate fat and adequate fiber. Vegetable offerings add fiber, vitamins, and minerals with lower sugar content than fruit. These are intelligent animals that respond well to positive reinforcement, and reserving certain highly palatable items exclusively for training sessions creates strong motivation without disrupting the overall dietary plan. Effective training treats include small pieces of banana, a single grape, a teaspoon of natural peanut butter, or a couple of mealworms. The key is that the treat should be something the coatimundi does not receive during routine feeding, ensuring it retains its novelty and reward value.

Commercial treat products marketed for exotic pets or small mammals are generally unsuitable for coatimundis. Most are formulated for herbivorous rodents and contain grain-based binders, artificial sweeteners, or yogurt coatings that add unnecessary sugar and processed ingredients to the diet. Calcium supplementation is essential for virtually all captive coatimundis and represents the single most important dietary supplement in the feeding program. A phosphorus-free calcium carbonate powder should be dusted onto insects and lightly mixed into fresh food offerings at least four to five times per week. Animals that are growing, pregnant, or nursing require daily calcium supplementation without exception. A cuttlebone or mineral block secured inside the enclosure provides an additional voluntary calcium source, though not all coatimundis will use one consistently enough for it to serve as the sole supplementation method.

Vitamin D3 supplementation is closely linked to calcium metabolism and is particularly important for coatimundis housed primarily indoors or in enclosures that filter ultraviolet light through glass or acrylic panels. A reptile-grade D3 supplement can be dusted onto food items two to three times per week, but dosing must account for the animal's body weight and any existing D3 intake from fortified kibble to avoid hypervitaminosis D, which causes dangerous calcium mobilization from bones and soft tissue calcification. A broad-spectrum multivitamin designed for omnivorous exotics can be added once or twice per week to cover micronutrient gaps, but over-supplementation with fat-soluble vitamins is a genuine risk in an animal of this size and should be discussed with an exotic veterinarian who can tailor the regimen to the individual animal's diet and bloodwork results.

Foods to Avoid

Chocolate in all forms is toxic to coatimundis and must never be offered under any circumstances. Theobromine and caffeine, the two primary methylxanthine compounds in chocolate, are metabolized slowly by procyonids and can cause vomiting, diarrhea, rapid heart rate, seizures, and death even in quantities that might seem trivially small relative to the animal's body weight. Dark chocolate and baking chocolate contain the highest concentrations of theobromine, but milk chocolate and white chocolate products should also be considered completely off limits. This prohibition extends to any baked goods, candies, or flavored products that contain cocoa or chocolate as an ingredient.

Grapes and raisins occupy a complicated position in coatimundi nutrition. While many experienced keepers offer grapes without incident and wild coatimundis consume various grape-family fruits, the documented nephrotoxicity of grapes and raisins in dogs and some other carnivore-adjacent species introduces uncertainty about their safety for procyonids. Given that the specific toxin responsible for grape-induced renal failure in dogs has only recently been identified as tartaric acid and that species-specific sensitivity thresholds for procyonids have not been established, a cautious approach is warranted. Some keepers choose to offer grapes in strict moderation while others eliminate them entirely, and either approach is defensible until species-specific safety data becomes available.

Processed human foods including chips, crackers, bread, pasta, candy, and fast food should never be fed to coatimundis regardless of how eagerly the animal may beg for them. These products contain levels of sodium, refined sugars, trans fats, and artificial additives that are inappropriate for any exotic animal, and their palatability can create strong food preferences that make the animal resistant to eating its nutritionally appropriate diet. Coatimundis are particularly prone to developing junk food addictions because their intelligence and social nature lead them to solicit food from humans, and well-meaning but uninformed visitors or family members can quickly undermine months of careful dietary management with a few handfuls of snack food.

Raw beans and legumes contain lectins and other anti-nutritional factors that can cause severe gastrointestinal distress and potentially red blood cell agglutination if consumed in significant quantities. Cooked beans in small amounts are generally safe and can contribute plant-based protein and fiber, but raw kidney beans, lima beans, and soybeans are particularly dangerous and must be kept well out of reach. Similarly, all parts of the avocado plant including the fruit flesh, skin, pit, and leaves contain persin, a fungicidal toxin that causes myocardial damage in many animal species. While the sensitivity of procyonids to persin has not been specifically studied, the potential severity of cardiac toxicity makes avocado an item that should be excluded from the coatimundi diet entirely as a precautionary measure.
