Sugar gliders are omnivorous marsupials belonging to the family Petauridae, and their dietary requirements differ substantially from those of placental small mammals such as hamsters or gerbils. In the wild, Petaurus breviceps feeds on tree sap, gum, nectar, pollen, insects, and arachnids, shifting between these food sources seasonally depending on availability. Captive sugar gliders, including the albino morph, require a diet that replicates this nutritional breadth as closely as possible, balancing plant-based sugars with adequate animal protein and carefully managed calcium-to-phosphorus ratios. Failing to meet these requirements leads to a cascade of preventable health problems that shorten lifespan and diminish quality of life.
The albino sugar glider does not have fundamentally different caloric or macronutrient needs compared to standard-colored gliders, but there are husbandry considerations that can indirectly affect nutrition. Albino gliders are more sensitive to bright light due to their lack of melanin in the iris, which can increase stress levels in improperly lit environments. Chronic stress suppresses appetite and disrupts digestive efficiency, meaning that an albino glider housed under harsh lighting may not absorb nutrients as effectively even when offered a nutritionally complete diet. Ensuring a low-light, calm environment is therefore a prerequisite for proper nutrition, not merely a comfort preference.
Protein should constitute approximately twenty-five to thirty-three percent of the overall diet, with the majority derived from insect or animal sources rather than plant proteins. Fat content should remain moderate, generally between five and twelve percent of total intake, sufficient to support the glider's high metabolic rate without promoting obesity. The remainder of the diet should come from natural sugars found in fruits and nectars, complex carbohydrates from vegetables, and the specialized gum and sap substitutes that form the foundation of established captive diets.
Calcium metabolism is the single most critical nutritional concern for captive sugar gliders of any color morph. A minimum calcium-to-phosphorus ratio of two to one must be maintained across the total diet, not merely within individual food items. Phosphorus-heavy diets leach calcium from bone tissue over time, producing metabolic bone disease that causes hindlimb paralysis, jaw deterioration, and ultimately death. Every food item added to a glider's diet must be evaluated for its calcium and phosphorus content and its effect on the overall dietary ratio.
