The accessories surrounding daily feeding and hydration routines are among the most frequently used and most frequently overlooked items in a Timor Monitor keeper's toolkit. A water dish might seem like a simple purchase, but the wrong choice leads to tipping, bacterial buildup, or a monitor that refuses to drink from a standing source. Similarly, the way prey is delivered and contained within the enclosure directly affects feeding efficiency, enclosure hygiene, and the keeper's ability to monitor food intake accurately.
Water dishes for the Timor Monitor should be constructed from heavy ceramic or glazed stoneware that resists the animal's attempts to overturn them during climbing or substrate excavation. The dish should be shallow enough that the monitor can enter and exit without difficulty but deep enough to allow voluntary soaking, which Timor Monitors engage in periodically, especially before shedding. A dish diameter of approximately six to eight inches suits most adult Timor Monitors well. Corner-mounted dishes designed for arboreal reptile enclosures are an excellent option, as they occupy less floor space and can be positioned at a slight elevation on a mounted shelf.
Feeding dishes serve a different purpose than prey scattering and are useful in specific scenarios. A smooth-sided ceramic or glass dish placed on the enclosure floor can contain slower-moving prey items such as mealworms, superworms, or black soldier fly larvae, preventing them from burrowing into the substrate before the monitor has a chance to feed. These dishes should have slippery vertical walls that the larvae cannot climb and a diameter wide enough that the monitor can comfortably reach inside without striking the rim.
Prey containment accessories also include escape-proof cricket keepers and roach bins that allow keepers to manage feeder insect colonies outside the enclosure. A well-designed cricket keeper includes dark hiding tubes that allow easy dispensing of individual crickets into the enclosure, reducing the chaos of loose insects and minimizing handling stress for both keeper and prey. Roach colonies housed in smooth-sided plastic bins with ventilated lids and egg crate stacks provide a steady supply of appropriately sized dubias with minimal maintenance.
